I was just watching "The Doctors" and they mentioned the average Thanksgiving Dinner has over 3,000 calories!! Yikes!

That is scary! My goal this Thanksgiving isn't to cut out the foods I love but to just have a very small portion of each. It wouldn't be a very happy Thanksgiving for me if I didn't eat my favorites.

yeah, some friends and I just celebrated thanksgiving this past saturday and according to my calculations, i had 2400 calories worth of food! and I didn't have seconds of anything (except I had two very small rolls) and only had about half a cup of mashed potatoes and gravy! I did have an average-sized piece of pumpkin pie, but no whip or ice cream. i walked for an hour earlier that morning and ate only a salad and coffee earlier that day, but still went 700 over on my daily allowance!

one piece of advice: go for the pumpkin pie and not the pecan pie. I slice pumpkin = 300ish cals, but pecan has over 500!

good luck to the rest of you....

I sat and figured it out last night and you can have eveything and keep it to about 900 Cals by eating
    3oz white turkey (no skin)
    1/2 cup mashed potato
    1/2 cup stuffing
    1/2 cup Fresh green beans
    1/4 Cup sweet potato
1/4 cup Gravy (drizzle on food or dip your fork in it then stab your food)
1 slice if cranberry or 1/8 cup
1 small slice of pumpkin pie (no whip cream,no crust)

This totaled about 896 (depending on the way you make the recipes. I used regular homemade mashed potatos (butter and skim milk) Plain bread stuffing (made with onion, celery ,herbs, bread cubes, chicken broth, fat free low sodium) I figure if you eat a sensible breakfast stay away from the appitizers, It can be accomplished without blowing your whole day out the window. Hope you have the Happiest of Holidays

P.S I use a 1/2 cup baking scoop to mesure my food it works great just scoop and level off the top (it dosnt compact the food like some of use might do if we are spooning into a measuring cup and squishing it down, (I was guilty of that)They have them in all sizes too.

Looks like I may add in an extra run this week.
  • Whoa! 3,000 calories! Yikes! I can definitely believe that though.
Thanks guidosgal for all that calorie information! Looks like if I just watch my portions I won't really overdo it!
