can't do basic gymnastics

So I'm a cheerleader/gymnast but I'm a beginner and I'm not very flexible. i pulled my hip today doing my side splits and i was really high in the air. i can't do a cartwheel and my instructor says i should just go straight to roundoff because i have a mental block against cartwheels. feeling very discouraged :( is there any way to get rid of this block and to increase flexibility rapidly? thanks xx
