Footwear - is there a difference?

Does it make any difference what kind of footwear you wear when you exercise?
I bought some cheap non brand trainers from a supermarket and i'm doing general aerobics exercises.
Ive seen all the adverts for tone up trainers and running trainers but am I really at risk of doing myself some damage by not using specifically designed trainers?
Advice please.
Thanks :-)

I'd avoid any of those "tone up" shoes. They don't work and they are very unstable--you'd likely injure yourself trying to do aerobics in them.
Rule of thumb is that if you are going to do a particular form of exercise for more than one hour a week, it makes sense to purchase the proper footwear for that exercise.
Basically, the shoes will differ in where they are stiff and where they are flexible, how high up the ankle they go, how much cushioning they provide and where, etc. So yes, there are differences among the various types of athletic shoes. But a "tone up" is not an athletic shoe--it's a gimmick.0
