My husband has been transferred to a new team within the company where he works. The goal for them is to design and create a Brazilian branch of the company, then to train the local hires in what to do and how to do it. He is very excited, his boss is excited, the whole company is excited.

He may have to travel to Brazil in a few months to see to things there. Just a business trip, and not even a sure thing, just a POSSIBLE trip. (I was afraid we would be moving to Brazil, talk about a lifestyle change!)

When he goes, IF he goes, I want to go too. (Boy, do I want to go!) But, well, Brazil isn't one of those places you drive to from Mississippi, so that means we would be flying.

The last time I flew I narrowly avoided needing a belt extender, but that was 15 years and 80 lbs ago. Somehow, I don't think it would be possible this time.

So, IF he goes it won't be within the next 6 months, possibly longer. That gives me plenty of time. If I work for it.

We're starting to save up money for the plane ticket and upgrade in hotel room. If he doesn't go to Brazil but I do lose 80-100 pounds (over time, I realize that) I think we'll plan a smaller vacation that will still make use of my newly gained air travel size. We'll see.

Anyhow...does anyone know how big a size the airline seats can handle? Does it vary by company? At what point do you have to buy a second seat? I assume First Class has larger seats than Coach? Anyone fly a lot and have some insights? Any air workers here? Websites I could check?

I think that most airplane seats are about 18 inches wide?

You'll have to check with the airline about their rules in regards to getting 2 seats or 1. I think a good rule of thumb is that if you can't put the armrest down, you're infringing on someone else's comfort.

First class does have larger seats. We flew to Vegas last week and were able to upgrade at check-in...much cheaper than just buying first class seats up front. My hubby still needed an extender...but I didnt :) I was so excited that my tray table actually went all the way down too! They did not make my hubby get two seats and he is a pretty big guy. We just made sure that when we checked our seats on the plane that we were sitting together in a row that had two seats. That way if anyone got "squished" it was us...not someone that was sitting next to us! I say check with the airline on their policy. Better to be prepared than to get there and be stuck needing another seat with none available. Have a great trip!
