Working out in the Fall and Winter

Morning Everyone. I know it's not here yet but I'm trying to plan ahead and prepare myself for the months to come. I've been working out consistently for about the past three months and done fairly good..lost almost 20 pounds. I have another 13ish to go before I meet my first big goal, and am starting to get a little anxious.

The past few months it has seemed almost too easy to lose, watching my calories though my diary and working out consistently. Generally, I get up and work out before the kids get up and while the hubs is getting ready for work (that's my preference) and if I can't get that in, I try to run in the evenings after the kids go to bed. I've had plenty of daylight whether it's 5:45 am or 8pm, and I feel safe at those times. I run/walk around 5miles over about 50 minutes...running the majority of the time. It's what has worked for me.

Well, now the weather is changing and I am starting to face some issues already:
1) It's pitch black at 5:45 am for quite a while and getting there at 8pm which are the two times I can generally fit my workouts in. I don't feel as safe and my husband doesn't want me out that early by myself. There's been some severe injuries and a girl was killed recently here working out/running/riding bikes bc of inattentive driving, etc.
2) With less light and a chill in the air some days, all I want to do it bake, eat and hibernate (I know this is a complete self control issue and it'll be my battle and I am up for it....hopefully :) )
3) I HATE running on a treadmill.....but I'm willing. I also have access to a gym, so I can get a workout in....but for the gym I have to fit it in over my lunch break from work which only gives me 30 minutes for a workout, and then I get down on myself because I don't feel as good about it when I'm done as I would have had I ran my 5 miles at 5:45am.

I have some workout videos too but they just don't make me feel like I'm working enough, compared to my long runs anyway.

So, I need advice...motivation....tips on the best gym workouts for that measly 30 minutes I'll have. I know I said that I hate the treadmill (compared to being able to run outside) but interval workout ideas on the treadmill are welcome. Any help you all can give. Thanks and Happy Monday!

  • This summer I prepped for the heat (too hot for us in summer, the rest of the year is awesome for workouts) by ordering Insanity. During the rest of the year I do kickboxing, tennis, running, biking, etc... but our summers are killer and once it's over 106 I can no longer do those things and exert so hard outside. The Insanity has definitely been pushing me as hard, or harder then my workouts outside do. Maybe find something you DO like and WILL make you work? The whole reason I love running outside is the adrenaline rush - that feeling you achieve where you feel you are in neutral, zoned on music and could just go forever... I find this DVD set leaves me in a sweaty mess on the floor by the end.
