Though if you're not in the mood to read. The article basically says running burns almost twice as much as walking. The male subjects burned 105 calories running, 52 walking in 1,600 meters (almost a mile) and the women, 91 and 43.

It makes sense when explained that way, basically you are leaping in some sense so not only are you propelling yourself forward but up, which accounts for extra calories.0

No, whatever you do to go a certain distance faster burns more calories.
You burn the same calories (theoretically) going the same distance. So in that reguard, you burn the same whether you walk or run a mile. However, if you run it, you have to factor in all the additional calories you burn in the extra minutes it would have taken to walk the same distance.
So if in a 30 minute period you ran a mile in 10, and existed for 20 more, you will have burned many more calories than walking the mile in 30 minutes.0
