Have you thought about getting her a gaming system like Wii Fit or Xbox Kinect?

She can modify the moves in any of the exercise DVDs you already have. She's going to have to find something she likes, I don't know if you can pick that for her.

But if she's able to run, she should be able to do the lower impact parts of both of those you mentioned, or at least modify them to suit her. I'm also in my 50s with lower back issues, and I do have to watch the high impact stuff, but I have learned to just ignore the jumping parts and do other stuff instead.

The best exercise is the type that she likes to do.

My dad, who is 75, comes to gym and lifts with me. He's had back and knee issues historically (he's had major spinal surgery). He finds that lifting actually helps him, reducing aches and pains. I'd suggest maybe not seeing age as a significant limiter. if your mum is active already, chances are she's well enough to engage in very similar activities to the ones you do yourself.

Leslie Sansone's Walk At Home DVDs are great for exercise beginners. To help her back and strength in general, she should incorporate some body weight resistance exercises to add strength to her core, like planks, knee push-ups, squats, lunges, planks and side-planks.
