Hi Everyone,

since starting to take Gabapentin for a back problem have struggled to lose any weight, has anyone managed to do so? Stopping taking it is not an option I'm afraid and just wanted to know how others have got on. Back prob also restricts my exercise.

Any comments would be appreciated thanks

    Hi

I take Gabapentin too. 600 mg 3 x day, for a couple years now. I did not have a weight gain since starting to take them. My weight has been consistent for years, yoyoing up and down, 3 up 3 down.

Since starting MFP, and being serious about it, in the last month I have lost 5 pounds.

I have back, hip, legs, knee problems. I grin and bear it most days. i will not let the pain take over my life. Some days I do take it easy, like today being a take it easy, work out the kinks day. Worked the last 2 days and did a big workout on Sunday, so today, I can hardly sit, stand, lay, walk, do anything, but I still try to move around and work out the pain. This does not mean I do not take my meds -- without fail I take my meds everyday.

On days that I know I will be doing lots of physical, I take pain meds before starting, during and after whatever it is I am doing. I also use lots of ice. I never use heat.

The more you try to move and do some exercise the more the pain eases up.

Hope you get your pain under control. Try doing walking everyday, and what I like to do is stretching. Also I bend at the waist and stretch the back and calf muscles until I can touch my palms to the floor. This did not happen overnight but is something I have worked on for months. Being able to get down is a good way to keep the back flexible.

    Good luck
