Burn 600 cals for 1hr hula hooping? No way?

I bought a hula hoop and have done 1 lot of 60 minutes, 30 each side. I looked on Internet to find roughly how much I would burn and it said 100 cals per ten minutes? Surely that can't be right?
I HAVE ordered a HRM and am waiting for it to be delivered...but that seems a lot to burn for minimal effort?
I wondered if someone on here may have used a HRM while hooping?
Thanks

I'd look at your perceived effort, and adjust down accordingly. Were you out of breath? was your heart rate up? How much? Like walking? Like running? Like running as fast as you possibly could? Could you hold a conversation while doing it?
Given that you're quite light, and you don't sound like you *feel* there was a lot of effort involved, I'd say yes, that's an overestimate.0 -

Thanks for replying...I wasn't out of breath doing it, I'd say my heart rate was up slightly as if I was walking fast but that's about it. I did feel it in my legs when I stopped though.
I found it easy to chatter away as I was doing it
When I logged it I cut 200 cals off just to be sure :laugh:0 -
Just done another 40 minutes and I felt it bit more this time
Anyone else hula hoop?0 -
I am just amazed that you can actually keep it up (no pun intended) for THAT long!!0

Thank you, I watch telly while I do it
I'm crap at most things but that's one thing I CAN do :laugh:0 -
You described it yourself as minimal effort. So it's probably not that great of a burn. If you want to do the exercises of your youth, cancel the HRM and order a jump rope instead. I promise you that you won't be questioning the effort or burn. And you won't spend an hour of your time doing it either.0

Did anyone use a HRM? I hula about 30 mins a day... sometimes basic sometimes Hulaerobics. Loving it!0

I just bought a hoop! I am at five minutes per day though because I can't keep it going much longer! My research says it can burn four calories a minutes but I coded it to two a minute....I would rather underestimate than overestimate. Definitely a workout though!0

It depends A LOT on the weight of the hoop. I hula hoop with a 3lb fitness hoop and wear my HRM. I burn on average 280 calories in half an hour which is the same burn as Spinning and Elliptical trainer!
A heavy hoop really works your waist and raises your heart rate, unlike a lightweight one.0 -
Hooping really does burn up to 600 calories per hour! I lost 20lbs and 8 inches off my waist and many inches all over by hooping. It usually burns 300 to 600 calories per hour but it depends on what you are doing. Chest hooping is the most aerobic part of hooping. It is what burns the most calories. Make sure that your hoop is an adult size hoop that weighs between 1.5 to 2.5 lbs. Once you start getting into heavier hoops you can bruise yourself. A hoop that is between 1.5 to 2.5 lbs burns more calories because you have to work harder to keep it up. I recommend getting a dvd from Hoopnotica or going to Hooping.org to watch some tutorials of how to hoop.0

I'm always in search of low impact aerobic activity (like/need to switch things up regularly - even cycling and swimming wear on things).
Will try this out, thanks!0 -
That's good to know! My hoop is 2lbs, I shall hoop today then do strength.0
