Introduce me to good exercises...

Hello
I keep seeing that strength training is good as well and can help lose inches.
I have been using 5 lb hand weights and doing all kinds of things for my arms but...
I would like to lose some inches around my waist and thighs.
I'm not sure what exactly helps with that and what counts as strength training.
Do you recommend any exercises that are absolutely amazing and/or are your all time favorites?
I do crunches, russian twists, leg lifts, jumping jacks and all the simple floor exercises.
I know there's more!

1. Firstly ditch the 5 pound weights, your purse weighs 5 pounds, so they will do NOTHING for you.
2. Next get yourself a cheap gym membership, one with a squat rack or power cage.
3. Then do Starting Strength, by Mark Rippetoe, eat a ton of protein and get plenty of sleep.
4. After a few months enter yourself into a competition, ANY kind of competition will do.
