GREAT blog article on SciAm about calorie availability from food. The short answer is "it depends." Read the article & enjoy. For me, it reinforces some existing practices:
(1) The more something LOOKS like what it is, probably the better it is for you.
(2) Overly processed foods really have no place in my diet - or probably in the diet of anyone who easily fattens up on a modern, 1st-world diet (I include in this prohibition grass seeds ground to fine powders, i.e. flour and juices evaporated to high concentration fluids or even crystals, i.e. HFCS or sugars).
