Best: ...hmmm.... dont eat dense/heavy foods 3-4 hours before sleeping. instead eat veggies or fruits.

worst: herbalife (replacement shakes) is the answer to long term weight loss... so drink them 5 times a day and dont eat solid foods....

So far I only have a best and it is to drink at least 8 cups of water a day!

It was a challenge for me in my group. I have been drinking at least that much water every single day since the 3rd of November. It helps me not to drink anything else bad! I've had maybe two glasses of pop since then too! The first couple days you have to go to the bathroom lots though!
  • great tips :]

    keep em comin'

Best: Quitting isn't an option. You screwed up? Oh well, move on. When you realize this is a life-long thing, you accept that you're going to have moments of weakness, downfalls, weight gains, and all the rest, but you know that you can't give up, and that there's always a new day waiting for you tomorrow.

Worst: Eat no more than 1200 calories a day AND exercise to burn even more on top of that...which equates to living on 600 or 700 calories a day. Crazy.
  • Best: (for me, anyway) Measure your condiments! Dressings, mayo, BBQ Sauce, etc. I am surprised at how much I used to slather on and how many calories I can save by measuring now!

Worst: Nuts and olives are nothing but fat - avoid them. When someone tells me this, I can guarantee their idea of the optimal weight loss "diet' will not work for me.
  • BEST: "You can have it all, just not all at once." It's all about balance and not depriving yourself. I have lost 12 pounds in a little less than 4 months, which is a little slower than I would like, but I haven't sacrificed the things I love to eat like chocolate and french fries. I just try to eat less of those things or balance them with exercise.

BTW, I read a fantastic book with LIFESTYLE tips for being healthy in your weight - Naturally Thin by Bethany Frankel. 10 tips that make so much sense.

WORST: Any "fad" diet - Cabbage Soup, Tuna & Salsa, etc. Temporary results at best. Nothing I could live with as a lifestyle.

WORST I've ever been told: burn more calories through exercise than you eat in a day. so... eat 1500 calories, you have to burn all of them off on a treadmill. needless to say, this outlook led to seriously lacking nutrition as I assumed I had to take in as few calories as possible.

Best: how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. Diets don't work; a slow but steady lifestyle change does.

Worst: any diet plan that cuts out an entire food group (and yes, chocolate is a food group  )

Best- Be HONEST with yourself and try your best to write down everything you eat. Keeping a food journal holds you liable to yourself for everything you eat!

Worst- Don't eat before you go to the gym....you'll just throw it up. (I always have something before I go to the gym or I won't have the energy).
Also, not diet related, but this gym has to be shared: "Work out at the gym for at least 3 hours a day, run for at least 1.5 hours, or it's not worth it. " (For me, if I followed this advice I'd stop working out after a week because I wouldn't have time and I'd be bored to tears. I find that it helps a lot to listen to my body, and to change up my exercises frequently so that it stays fun!)

    Best - Two words...portion control

Worst - Not sure it's "diet advice" but the phrase "Just one won't hurt, here try one......Come one just eat one" (hate those people)

Oh God, I hate those people too. "Just one thing won't kill your diet.." It sounds like my family.

Best: This is a lifestyle change, not a temporary "diet". This is how I plan to be for the rest of my life.

I will think of a worst later.

    Sorry!

It's all good! I can see how I might have been misunderstood. I was trying to emphasize that people who tell me to avoid nuts and olives like the plague are crazy. I LOVE nuts and olives (and other healthy fats) and I feel pity for those that "fear" them as if they are deep fried chocolate covered twinkies.

Worse advice: "Colon cleanses are great for you, and will help you lose weight! "

I even tried the Master Cleanse... didn't last long. :p

I talked to my doctor about this and he basically said that cleanses were bunk. That there's nothing in our body that couldn't be 'cleansed' with lots of fibre and water. And that the weight lost on these plans were mostly water and poop, and that it will be gained back in no time.

Best advice: Plan your meals in advance. That way you're not staring hungrily into a cupboard wondering what to fix for dinner, only to resort to Kraft Dinner. Again.
  • another best: chew your food slowly, scarfing leads to a munchies attack later.

another worst: using laxatives while dieting. Yes someone REALLY told me that. ickk!
