Weights and where to start?

I keep reading over and over that many women have noticed their weight loss really kick in once they started lifting weights, or following a weight routine, but where does one start? I generally feel a bit lost in that section of the gym, and while I know a bit, I wonder if I am really maximizing my time there ?
Can anyone recommend a book/program/routine that I can look into to try and really start shedding some of these pounds?
