Ok so my husband braved the crowds on Black Friday to go out and get me my Wii Fit that I've been wanting. I briefly used it last nite, due to it not being my work out day, so before I really get into it I'd like to know what you all think about it (this obviously is directed only to others who have/have used one).

Any pointers, tips, likes, dislikes? I'm not much of a gamer so the whole Wii thing in itself often mystifies me~

Thanks in advance!

My favorites are Rhythm Boxing, Rhythm Step, Rhythm Kung Fu, and the Parade game. Yeah, I have issues with rhythm games, lol. The Rhythm Boxing burns the most. Once you get to expert level on it, it will torch through 90 calories every 10 minutes. It's great if you get really into it (hard punches, bouncing around, etc)

Also if you go to My Wii Fit Plus Routine & click the scale dude, he will set up a workout for you depending on how much time you have. That'll get you through 100-150 cals in about 1/2 hour, too. :)

Bumping this, hoping for more advice on Wii Fit. I got it last week and played a bit over the weekend. I love it too!! I really liked the Yoga. It helps to have something telling me where my center of balance is. I also loved the Rhythm Parade. My 6 year old is having a blast with the Wii Fit too. I have to kick her off when I want to use it.

Thanks, Trish, for the tip on the My Wii Fit Plus Routine. I was hoping there was some way to plan a workout. I'll have to check that out.
  • I could ramble indefinitely about Nintendo and Wii Fit Plus, but I wont. Simply put, it's a great game and a great tool for health and fitness. It's true that a lot of the games aren't so much focused on Aerobics, but the ones that are do a good job. Today, I did a 10 minute Free Run around the island, a 10 minute Rhythm Boxing segment, and then 10 minutes of Super Hula Hoop. That alone burned over 220 calories for me (a 5' 11" guy of 198lbs). I did a little extra of the more fun activities like the Bird Target thing, which is where you flap your wings to fly as a chicken from target to target to score points. That works your arms out good. And since I try to get at least 100 crunches (or similar) in, I did the Jackknife challenge where I try to beat the trainer in amount of Jackknife's I can do. This however is not a normal day for me in the game.

Usually I focus a bit more on the strength training aspect of the game. There's a ton of exercises both for that and for Yoga which will help your stability, core, and specific muscle groups. This game knows how to help you tone your body. You can make your own routines or you can choose from a multitude of 6-8 minute routines that focus on specific categories like, "Overindulged", "Relax", or "Arms". These are useful but because they focus less on the aerobics, they burn less calories per minute than something else. Still though I find them useful and even after I've exercised for the day (with or without the game) I find myself interested in doing a couple of these smaller routines to help calm me at night, burn a few of those dinner calories (or dessert calories, :blushing: )

I haven't played others but I don't currently see a need to. At this stage in my life I just need to be worrying about eating better and burning a goal of calories to ensure I can drop some pounds. This game might not kick my butt every session, but I can push it to do so if I choose the right activities.

Something I like too is that Nintendo uses this island setting in multiple games of theirs. I can pop in Wii Fit Plus and take a jog around the island, seeing it from that perspective, but I can also pop in the also-excellent, Wii Sports Resort, and do some Archery over the water or fly around the island and see it from the sky. I hope Nintendo continues to incorporate this island setting in future games of this style and genre, exercise-based or not.
