Working on a lifestyle change...not just a diet!

I have dealt with weight issues my whole life and I have tried almost every fad diet you can think of. Sometimes I saw results but the weight always came back. I'm at a point in my life where I need to take the reins and finally get my weight under control. I'm sick of having self confidence issues and thinking people are judging me because of my weight. I'm sick of my weight holding me back and making me feel not good enough. I have a great life in every other aspect except this one huge problem. I would like to lose about 40 pounds. I'm going to give this site a try and see if I can finally change my life for good instead of relying on a diet for a quick fix.

Welcome and good for you. I just left the staff lunchroom where one of the teachers was taking weight loss pills. She has lost close to 15 pounds very quickly, but I know from experience that it comes back ever quicker unless there's the type of lifestyle change you're talking about.0

Hi, and welcome to THE best site on the web! :flowerforyou:
Between the easy to use food counter (which by the way is SUCH an eye opener!) and all the wonderfully supportive members, you WILL be able to lose the weight that you want to, AND, it'll "almost" be easy doing it!
I recommend logging ALL your foods BEFORE you have them, rather than later, as it tends to lead to better food choices. (not to mention you'll know if you've got enough numbers left to have a night time snack, like I ALWAYS try to do!) Some people also like to weigh and measure some things, such as meats, rather than just estimating and possibly being WAY off! :noway:
Don't go making the mistake that if you have LOTS of numbers left at the end of the day that you'll lose even faster, because that DOESN'T happen. Feel free to read any info about the site in the "help" section at the top of the home page. And also, under "all topics", then "general", and check out the first few threads. They'll really help you understand how MFP works.
Before coming here, I had tried just about EVERYTHING out there, including hypnosis, TWICE, and nothing really worked until MFP!
Also, drink LOTS of water, it REALLY DOES help! :drinker:
As far as exercise goes, it doesn't always have to be awful. For my exercise, I walk almost every day, (weather permitting!) I also dance to a fast oldies CD that my husband made up of all my favorite old songs. (Like "Love Shack", Wild, Wild West", "Mony, Mony", "Footloose", and "Gloria")
It's free, (unlike a gym!) fun, and I can even watch tv at the same time, so I never get bored!
I also have Wii Fit, and jog to that, which is a lot of fun, and easy too!
So, to make a LONG story short, make good food choices, eat in moderation, get some exercise, and you WILL lose the weight that you want to!0 -
Welcome aboard, you've come to the right place. This is a great tool that will work wonders. Just take a look at the before and after thread - and remember that the folks with huge successes are just like you, they just started a little earlier. You can do it too, and you will, I just know it.
This is easy - here's all ya' gotta do:
Cook smart, lotsa good filling stuff. Some fruits, lotsa veggies, some grains-cereals, some starchy stuff, some lean meat. Almost nothing fried (and certainly nothing batter dipped & deep fried), and very very little pastry/cakey stuff.
Count your calories accurately with the food guide here, and stay as close to your calorie allowance as you reasonably can. If you cook properly you shouldn't be too uncomfortable on the calorie allowance MFP will give you.
Get some exercise - work that gym, walk a little every day, something - that's a huge help. Remember to log your exercise and eat at least some (I eat most) of your exercise calories.
And drink your water!
That's it, piece o' cake. Wife and I have been doing it for about 10 months now and we've done well.
You can do it too0 -
I have tried "gimmicky" diet plans too, and have finally realized that a lifestyle change is what will work for the long term. Set moderate goals for weight loss through common sense nutrition and exercise.0
