Hello!
My name is John! My starting weight was 290-295 in October 2010. I finally decided enough was enough and changed my lifestyle, starting with eating. 5 months later (March 2011), I started walking/running, and have been ever since. I think the running has been one of the best ways of really trimming down. In September 2011, I ran my first race which was a half marathon(13.1). That was awesome! I certainly didn't train for it, but I was capable, and I completed it. Also in September 2011, I started swimming laps. I really enjoy swimming and that seems to give me a good balance, and some upper body strength.
I have had a ton of ups and down's along the way. I've gone through different fads of what I would eat and not eat, or workout routines. I went almost a year without touching fast food, and for some reason allowed it back into my life (not really anymore). I sometimes would allow social/family pressure on what I ate or drank to influence me, and would go easy on myself. I really wish I had stayed more "obsessed" with my plan. Ultimately, it's my own fault when I would let myself slip. Thankfully, I have never fallen off the horse, although I have lost progress quite a few times. I really hate when something messes up my routine like the holidays, vacations, sickness, etc. It's hard to get back into that routine.
I decided to join this site mainly to start really tracking my progress and what I consume. So far, it's really been handy to keep track and it makes me realize how I need to plan my meals (and how everything adds up too quickly!). I also feel I can inspire and motivate some people, and they can do the same for me.
I have attempted many times before to lose weight or get in shape. I think this time around it HAS worked because I decided for myself what I was going to do and nobody was going to get in my way. I was doing it for ME and nobody else except God. I feel my workouts are an act of worship to God. I truly believe that without Him, I'd never have done this. I constantly pray for His strength, and give each workout giving it to Him.
I have really enjoyed the process of getting smaller and looking better. It seemed the first year I lost most of the weight, and I was flying through wardrobes. It was fun getting new clothes ( I learned to buy used). I would also keep the next size down as a reminder.
My best advice is to not expect any friends or family to keep you on track. Focus on the goal and stick to it. Don't let someone tell you you are going overboard (maybe in some cases you are). There really shouldn't be any "days off" to reward yourself. Non active people don't seem to be that supportive of active people. Sometimes you feel like an outcast, but that's ok!
Well, I hope this was a good summary of my mission. I'd love comments and feedback. Glad to be here!
