Super Simple Black Bean Brownies

So I made a ridiculously easy black bean brownie (BBB) recipe taking a lot of fluff out of other BBB recipes and had great success with my last batch. Here's what you'll need:

Cake mix
8 ounces Diet Soda
15 ounce can of Black Beans

Yes, that's all! Rinse and drain the beans, and then puree (or process or grind or whatever) them with a bit of water so you get a slightly watered paste. Mix with cake mix and diet soda. Put in a baking dish and cook according to the cake mix instructions.

My batch wasn't as dense as other recipes claim to be and came out more cake-like. I think that had something to do with me adding a touch too much water, or being impatient and taking them out 5 minutes too early. No bean taste or texture. Either way, they are super gooey and chocolatey and came out to right about 115 calories a brownie!

wow, your recipe really IS a lot simpler than the other black bean brownie recipes,
    way way simpler!!!!
probably costs less, not sure, but, probably costs less to make these. some of the other BBB recipes i've read list 8 to 12 ingredients...

and your recipe is slightly less calories, too. I saw a BBB recipe, which uses Struvia or Splenda, but it had terrible reviews....
    http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/recipe?id=9978369

I've never made BBB but want to try them.

so these actually taste good? I wonder if i used applesauce instead of cola,(???)
if i would get a more dense, fudge-y recipe than you got using cola....

with 'real' brownies being about 200 to 300 calories each, (or more)
i guess the advantage here is about 100 calories less,
plus you get some protein, some iron and fiber
    and some vitamins and minerals
really quite a bit of nutrition in black beans,
    for the calories....

    vs. a 'real' brownie......

    welllllllllllll,
    one second thought,
    there i'd be,
with a whole platter of brownies, at over 100 calories for each and every one of them..........

i guess i better wait til i have my new habits going a bit stronger til i try a batch,
    come to think of it.

lol, i am still working on staying under my calories for a day, still brand new at getting strong habits going. BUT i will save this recipe for a special occasion or for later on, when i know i won't eat entire batch in one day!! rofl!!!!!!

or, i'll have to figure out some way to make only one or two at a time, ha ha!!

  • We made this but the mix was slightly different:

    1 package brownie mix
1 can black beans, low sodium with liquid that comes in the can

Blend the beans in a mixer to make smooth, stir into brownie mix and bake like normal. Your pop will fluff it up further, which gave it the cake consistency, but isn't necessary for brownies, which you want to be denser. So, skip the pop!

We took these to a pot-luck- no one could believe that they weren't normal brownies.

Sounds better than the GI recipe I have which uses Splenda. They were a punishment to consume so we tossed them. Worst "birthday treat" I ever made - my sister has still not forgiven me.

    You don't drain them?

    yum!! thanks!
  • I love this recipe, it seems simple enough that someone without any baking skills (like me) might be able to pull it off.
I have two questions: What type of cake mix did you use? Would it work with a sugar-free brownie mix?
