Diverticulitis

I had my first bout with Diverticulitis early this month and ended up in the hospital for three days. I've now had a second attack starting early this morning and have started on antibiotics this afternoon in the hopes that a hospital stay is not going to happen this weekend. I know to stay away from nuts and seeds, corn, popcorn etc. since those tend to be trigger items. But, would someone who shares this condition, please review my food diary and let me know if there was something that I ate that set this second attack off or did I just happen to get the luck of the draw this time around. Thanks.

I'm sorry about your struggles. I do not have the disease, but my grandfather and father both had/have it.

Watch out for the tomatoes. They have seeds. I don't know if you have to stay away from them forever... but until you get good at managing the condition, you'll want to stay away from absolutely everything that could cause a problem. I recommend moving to a very bland and simple diet, then slowly adding things back in.

    More fiber. Lots more.

I'm a healthcare professional so I'll put my two cents in - but please be careful who you take advice from. When you are in the stages of a flare up you want to avoid fiber, go for softer foods and easy to eat and digest foods. When you are doing well - go for the high fiber. That keeps things moving through the GI tract and should hopefully help you avoid a flare up. Ask to see a Registered Dietitian and she/he will give you lists of safe foods and foods to avoid. Good luck!!

I also had an attack this month and unfortunately I was allergic to the medicine. I was on a liquid diet for 2-3 days to flush my bowels out, then slowly introduced foods. Nothing with seeds, you even need to watch the breads you eat. I eat tons of fiber now and I still have trouble getting my bowels to work properly. Good luck to you.

We thought it might have been the tomatoes. Which is very frustrating since I love tomato sandwiches!

While I could talk more on the subject - have to run out...I notice you don't log in any water? Water plays a huge role in our intestinal system. Makes the job much easier - along with helping the bowel to form waste properly and help with easier evacuation, it also soothes! Soothing is what you want! :o)
