eBay "Custom" Wedding Dresses

Has anyone here bought a wedding dress on eBay? I see tons of sellers who make them to order...

and I have a very specific look in mind that is very rare to see in stores. I hate strapless...it's so popular and boring. I want long sleeved lace dress. There's tons of those on eBay, but I'm worried that I'd get it in the mail and hate how it looks on me....

Any thoughts, advice?

Thank you!

Do you have vintage wedding fairs in the US? They're all the rage here in the UK & a couple of my friends have got their wedding dresses that way. One was a vintage 50's dress with long lace sleeves that looked amazing on the day. The other was a 60's 'flower child' type of dress which again looked fab.
Or try re-sale shops. You can always find a local dressmaker to do any alterations for you.

That would be super fun! IT's hard to find real vintage ones in my size though....the women were much smaller then with tiny size 24 waists....I'm like a 31...and in a size 10 ior so, so I'd have to have a vintage looking one made for me.

Just be sure to look at the seller's ratings on their account and any other account they own. I don't see why you couldn't. Maybe you could request a mock up (out of cheaper fabric or something) before committing to the final thing.

My friend who wore the 50's dress is a (UK) 14/16 and found her perfect dress. Your perfect dress is out there, just have fun looking fot it & try loads of dresses on you might be surprised.
    Good luck.:flowerforyou:

I got my wedding dress for $17 on ebay and had to pay about $25 to have some minor adjustments made to it. But if you are very specific, then it is best to go into a shop. David's Bridal has a whole bunch of $99 dresses. But for specifics, usually you have to pay the big bucks. :ohwell:

I don't know about ordering offline like that...like you said what happens if you get it in the mail then hate how it looks....is it possible to talk to the people at the bridal stores and see if there are ways that they can alter dresses to get the kind of look that you want?

I would be extremely hestitant on purchasing that way. If I did, I would make sure I did a ton of research on the seller first. Many vendors of wedding dresses online are Chinese knock off sites. Some have a decent product, others are nightmares, poor fabric, poor constructions, orders not arriving, etc. Also keep in mind that many of these have phoney positive reviews.
I spent some time on the Knot, they have a section dedicated to dresses. You can ask for experiences with specific vendors to get a better idea.
    Good luck.

I've looked at David's Bridal website....and they have nothing...they are all so mainstream and common. I envision myself in an all lace long sleeve scalloped wedding gown....in ivory...really vintage and elegant looking.
  • I suggest if you want to try the ebay route, then do it very early and make sure its going to arrive at least 6months before your day. Just in case you have to get another dress made. I'm also very tempted to go the Ebay route, but my reason is cost wise haha. If I'm only going to wear the dress once I cannot talk myself into spending big money on the dress. (Just my opinion)

    Good luck though =D

You can most likely return it if it does not meet your expectations or standards. Check with the seller, and see if that's an option.

And if the fabric you want is something particular, then why not ask them if you can provide the fabric and they make it for you? I'm not sure if that's as common, but might also keep your cost down. Lace can be very expensive.

you generally cant return a custom made dress...thats what sucks...:(
  • I would contact a local bridal store that you trust and ask for the name/number of the person who does their alterations. Contact that person and see if they can do a custom dress. I am having a dress made for my daughter for her homecoming that way, she has something very specific in mind we could not find anywhere and the price was great.
