When I was in scouts - yes as a girl.
We went on this week long Canoe camp in Hamilton Ontario.
We were left on a little island with only canoes and had to canoe everywhere and to other islands to see people and do events.
It was a lot of fun!

I want to get a SUP board. Once I get one (and a good paddle) it will be my new workout 1-2 days a week. Awesome!

    SUP = Stand Up Paddle

They are easy to carry, like a surf board, so you can do this alone often. I can't wait to get one!
  • I love kayaking. The whole 400cal/hour easy paddle seems a bit extreme though.
    400cph makes sense I think.
Kayaking isn't just paddling, there's loading, unloading, launching, getting in, getting out...
So when they say about 400cph, i belive it is in that range.
  • Who knows how to do the "ESKIMO ROLL"

I love canoeing and kayaking! I have definitely been in more canoes than kayaks in my day, but they are both fun.

Last time i went canoeing, it was through the Daniel Boone National Forest in Kentucky. It was absolutely beautiful! The trees had just turned orange, and we were in the bottom of a canyon. We only saw a few other people on the whole 8 hour trip, it was truly wilderness. Unfortunately, the water was low and we had to get out and walk the canoe over the rocks a bunch of times. That part sucked, but the views were amazing!!!

I LOVE both kayaking and canoeing. Usually for solo/exercise I jump in the kayak- for family I have the canoe but my girls are getting old enough I'm trying to talk the wife into a couple tandem kayaks.

Anyone else like to map their trips with GPS?

My husband and I just started - it was a Father's Day gift to him and we loved it! I didn't know how many calories it burned, but my shoulders sure do ache by the end.
  • Love those photos....
    Great job.

I also love your idea about Geo-tracking
    Great idea.

I'm going to look into it.

SailorStevens is coming to you using the new iPAD.4G.LTE.GPS.WiFi.BT.TELUS with live Geo-Tracking capabilities

One of my goals/rewards is to get a canoe or kayak and start paddling. I'm hoping to reach my goal and be one the water next summer.

    Ever done any "Gunnel Bobbing"...?

Its where you stand up on the gunnels at the stern of the canoe and jump up and down.
The downward thrust of the canoe pushes the stern of the canoe deep into the water causing the bow to lift out of the water. Once you are pushed back up into the air, the canoe lurches forward and that continued process propels you across the water to your destination (if you can keep it up without missing the gunnels on your way back down)

Yes, I'm into kayaking. Obsessed, actually. I took a kayak lesson in June 2010, bought a kayak, and have been on the water every chance I get ever since. My son and I have taken a kayak/camping trip in June for the last 2 years on the French Broad River in North Carolina, paddling past the Biltmore in Asheville on day 5. Very cool. We paddle rivers in middle Tennessee a good bit, and I paddle Percy Priest Lake in Nashville after work at least once a week.

I love paddling buddies, because I love to hear about kayak trips and see the photos. Kayakers, please friend me!~

have not been much in the past few year but love it
  • Don't forget...
If you are looking for a Kayaking partner in the Niagara Region of upper New York State or Southern Ontario,
    I'm in.
I even have an extra Kayak you could use, if you don't have your own.
  • Not sure if anyone is interested.
I created a "Group" here at MFP called THE RIVER RATS.
I thought it may be a good place to talk canoeing and Kayaking,
Post our trips and Cals burnt, post trip photos, plan trips and stuff like that.
I never created a Group before, so my experience is very limited.
If any of my Kayak friends, or anyone that may have an interest in this, would like to help out to get this started by becoming an Administrator or Moderator, or joining, let me know.
  • I bought a kayak 2 weeks ago after not getting in one for 20 years. It's awesome I go out 3-4 times a week to the local canal and paddle upstream to the river split and ride the river back. Including the walk to the canal and home again my HRM says I'm burning 2700 calories a trip.

Which has given me a different problem. How on earth do you eat back that many calories?

P.S. Feel free to add me.

I can't find the group in a search. Any suggestions?
  • I can't see the group either.
  • I told you I didn't know what I was doing...:noway:

    But I figured it out
    It was set to Private
    Its now set to Public

    Try it now
  • I found some good video clips on kayaking, canoeing and rafting techniques and posted them in
THE RIVER RATS group under the topic of TRAINING.

    If anyone is interested...
    Visit -> http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/8194-the-river-rats
If you have to get in shape and lose weight, then you may as well have fun doing it.
Kayaking/Canoeing/Rafting is healthy, affordable and easy on the environment.

Remember... Always try to... "Keep Your Paddle Wet"

Sailor, question. Should you be able to eskimo roll just about any kayak with some practice. I tried with my Delta 12 10 ( with skirt on) and failed miserably. But my only coaching was a couple of Youtube videos.

Well, there is no "real safety need" to roll a stand-on-top or sit-on-top boat.

Your boat, the Delta 12/10 is a great little boat... Good choice!
And yes, you should be able to do the roll with ease.
I'm not saying that it will be easy to learn, but once you figure it out, then you should be able to do it with ease.
Are you throwing your full upper body back as far as it will go and really "flicking" your paddle hard during your attempt?

I'm good at what I do, but I am not certified as an instructor and learning how to do a roll properly is so vitally important for your safety, Not to mention fun to do... Hope you had someone with you when you tried.
I would strongly advise you to seek the assistance of a qualified instructor...
Maybe they have classes at your local community pool.
It will be well worth the effort.
