Hi,

I was curious how everyone accounts for the calories burned when they play a round of golf...I just picked up the Polar FT7 HRM, and burned like 1800 calories the other day when we were out for a 4.5 hour round of golf...

Curious to hear how you account for the calories burned...I just think that 1800 is on the high side?!?! thoughts?

Jennifer

  • Hi Jennifer - my HRM records about 1400 cals for 18 holes walking but I suppose it will depend on the course too - length, hills, etc. got my first hole-in-one this month! A PW for 88 yards - think I burned another 100 doing jumps and somersaults afterwards!

I never counted it. For me it was just routine casual activity. I didn't even count it as exercise. I either golfed on rest days or did my regular workout first. And that was walking 18 hours and playing in 2.5 hours (with an open course).

I don't think that HRMs can accurately estimate calories for something like golf. Normally, your HR is just not going to stay at a sustained level for the numbers to mean anything.

During the time I was heavy, I played golf minimum of once per week, from March thru December. Never lost an ounce. And saw mostly other fat guys on the courses. So, I'm kind of an old curmudgeon on this topic.

I walk and carry my clubs and I count golf as exercise. (I play rarely, and I suck--the worse you are, the more exercise it is.) Do take into account that you would already be burning about 340 cals just being alive for 4.5 hrs and probably shave off 200 cal from 9 holes and 500 for 18 holes, because that does seem high and there are plenty of standing-around times.

I would not think HRM's would be accurate for a round of golf. If you walk the course then wear a pedometer that has a calorie counter and measures miles and count it as a walk. A constant walk or cycling the HRM's provide a more accurate reading. Too much standing around in golf for the most part. So, I agree with you.
I carry a 6 handicap and have been playing golf for 48 years as I started at age 12. Golf does burn calories especially if you walk, but how much is a guess. If you use a HRM be conservative in your burn count.

Thank you for your responses to my question! I truly do appreciate it. When I saw that it was that high, I was surprised...
I've been playing golf for almost seven years, and didn't consider it 'exercise' until recently...I was surprised to learn that I am in the 'fat burning' zone for about 45 minutes during a round of golf...the rest of the time is considered a 'fitness' zone.

I will defin take your suggestions, and deduct calories from this round...I don't think I am going to make it to the gym today...So going to push extra hard while walking the fairways, when my husband is taking the cart to search for his balls! jajaja

Have a great day! And feel free to add me as a friend...I can talk golf ALL day :) as well as, offer support & encouragement on your weightloss journey, as well...
