sodium questions

Yesterday I looked up my recommended amount of sodium intake and I've been way over. The past two days is when I have really overdone it with sodium (i put garlic salt on EVERYTHING) and i've noticed a slight increase on the scale.
This is water retention then? too much sodium ?
aside from retaining water, can too much sodium actually affect your metabolism or keep you from losing weight at a normal pace?
i don't think this is a stupid question, every time i google these things the livestrong site comes up and i've heard they are not always reliable. i figure there are some trainers on here or whatever who might know
thanks
