i just joined a few days back, but i have a really difficult time getting up to 1200 cals. on most days, i miss about 100-200 cals. its difficult for me to find the right food for that because i live in a place with no fridge/kitchen and most of what i can buy is fast food... i know, very unhealthy, but i try.

people keep telling me that dieting will never work w/o exercise, and if i do lose weight with just dieting, ill have a lot of extra skin. but seeing that i can barely even make it to 1200, do i still have to? is what they told me true?

thanks!

  • oops. i think i posted in the wrong category. sorry!

i guess what i can ask about food and nutrition is, just what kind of 'healthy; fast foods are there? i don't think things like mcdonalds salad work, because the calories are too low and i don't want to eat about four of those just to get to 1200..

You can lose weight without exercise but your chances of keeping it off are not good. The brains behind the brawn is that building muscle helps the body burn energy that would otherwise be stored as fat.

Where are you that you don't have access to a fridge? My suggestion there is to go get yourself some fruit since it can be stored at room temp. and there must be a grocery store somewhere. Most grocery stores have salads and delis that you can go and try to be healthier. You could also buy an ice chest and store some fresher food that way, but you have to be willing to go to the grocery every day or two and get ice, etc, but if you really want to be healthier this won't seem like too much effort.

I know this may offend you, or someone else, but lets face it, you must be able to find 1200 calories a day, probably more, especially if you choose to eat fast food. If you were not capable of eating at least 1200 calories a day you wouldn't be overweight and trying to lose. Fast food joints may offer "healthier" options, but they are not as healthy as taking the time to plan ahead and make yourself go to the grocery store for some truly healthier food options. You are the only thing standing between you and weight loss.
  • thank you.

i recently rented a small apartment, and it's practically useless at the moment. i haven't gotten things like fridge yet, and it didn't come with cooking stuff. (:

i'm not offended, and these past few years, i just lost my appetite. i think the reason i don't have my ideal weight anymore is because my metabolism is messed up, and i only decided to fix it recently.

When we bought our house we didn't have a fridge for almost two weeks and I used ice chests to keep milk and fresh fruit in the house for the kids. Yes a fridge is best but this worked for us and it just meant I had to be diligent about getting to the store every couple of days.

You will find a solution that works for you. Also, calorie dense foods may be what you need right now, peanut butter (no fridge required), cheese, nuts, etc. There are a lot of options for higher calorie but still good for you foods and a lot require no fridge. Eating healthy to most people means eating more fruits and veggies and it takes a lot of veggies to make 1200 calories, but eating less through out the day and eating higher calorie options may be what you need to do to get your calories in.

It doesn't have to be low in calories to be healthy, it just needs to be healthy...
  • nuts peanuts almonds cashews pistachios all good snacks and a serving around a ounce range from around 140 to 200 buy abig bag and ziplocks but about 1/8 cup around a ounce in each bag and put them in the cookie jar great snack
  • thank you very much. you were both a lot of help.

For a little bit of money you can make a makeshift kitchen in a small room. Check out craigslist or garage sales, for a small fridge and a microwave maybe even a toaster oven. You can go to walmart or somewhere and get a electric burner for 10 to 25 bucks and pots and go to the dollars store for all your cooking utensils. You can be set up pretty well for under 100 bucks. I did this when I rented a room back when I was 18 yrs old. even though I wasn't supposed to have all that in there (they rented out about 10 studios with no kitchen) I kept a tablecloth to cover th whole area if they ever decided they wanted to come in. Besisdes I always smelled popcorn wafting thru the air from my neighbors I know they didn't cook that with a lighter lol

Here are some other foods that don't need a fridge

Granola - loose or the bars or the new mini bites
oatmeal bars and the breakfast cookies
fruit - you don't have to refridgerate them
    peanut butter
    jelly
    breads, pitas, and wraps
rice cakes - the minis are great
soups - not sure if you have a microwave

    Hope this helped
