The Great Egg Debate

I love my eggs and I always eat my eggs whole. I normally have about 6-8 eggs a week.

But now I see there is a big debate around the cholesterol in eggs and now 'they' are saying it's bad for you again.

I was under the impression that the fats in eggs are good fats.

I have hardly any fat in my diet (on most occasions) Can having so many eggs really be bad for me?

Unless you have naturally high cholesterol (diagnosed by a doctor), dietary cholesterol makes up only a very small portion of blood cholesterol. Most of the cholesterol in your blood is made by the liver not absorbed in your diet.

Long story short, unless your doctor says otherwise, whole eggs, yolks and all, are totally fine. Better than fine. Egg yolks contain a lot of good vitamins and fatty acids.

I'm going to keep eating whole eggs regularly until someone tells me (specifically me, not a general recommendation for someone else) that it's not good for me.

There is no debate, eggs are fine.

Dietary cholesterol has been wrongly vilified.

You're fine. Worries about cholesterol are overblown. As others have said, a relatively small amount of the total cholesterol in the body comes from the diet. Still, it never hurts to be careful since some people are more sensitive than others. According to USDA recommendations, just about everyone is fine with an average of 7 eggs per week.
  • I posted the same question a while back. Here's the link if you want to check it out. :)

  • I like my eggs whole. BUT, if I'm high on calories and I'm using eggs in a recipe I'll use the egg beaters to bring down cals. Dietary cholesterol has been wrongly accused of being unhealthy. I work in the med field and we are all being "re-educated" on a lot of this saturated fat and cholesterol stuff. It's been eye opening for sure.

You're probably thinking about this study http://www.atherosclerosis-journal.com/article/S0021-9150(12)00504-7/fulltext as it was reported in the news recently. Have a look at the weaknesses of the study.

The egg debate is an old one. Eggs do have relatively high cholesterol, but that only matters if your body is prone to absorbing and accumulating excess dietary cholesterol. The fat in eggs is generally considered to be good forms of fat. Bottom line, get a basic blood test for cholesterol levels done so you know what your body is doing. If you've been eating lots of eggs for a while and your cholesterol is low or normal, you're fine.

I eat 5-8 eggs a week, along with bacon, breakfast sausage, yogurt, milk and other supposedly unhealthy things. My cholesterol is low, and I know that after getting it tested.
