Going Grey!

I am 60 years young and now that I am losing weight and getting in shape I want to do other things to free up my life. One is to quit using hair color. The fake blond "bar" hair worked for years but I don't want to use chemicals on my head anymore.I also want to grow it out so I can wear a ponytail when I work out. I saw a woman the other day with beautiful silver hair and a tattoo "sleeve" and she was gorgeous. I had to stop here to tell her how much I loved her hair. What do you think about us super seniors having long grey hair?

My mom has long grey hair.. she's never tried dying. She's had grey hair since she was in her teens... I unfortunately got the same fate. I've had grey strands poking out since I was 18. I still dye my hair but if you want to show off those silver strands, go for it!
  • Love it and hope to embrace it 29 years from now with my tattoos and all!

I have short grey hair & don't want to colour it. I'm too slipshod and lazy and would let the roots grow out - now that IS a look I hate. Going natural without having unsightly roots may be a problem - you could go for blonde highlights & gradually let nature take over I guess?

Gave up dyeing 10 years ago - it was just too much hassle! Also went from long to short - the longer is was the thinner it got! now with a short crop it has some body!

You just need to keep up the hydration to combat the coarseness/texture. I hope to be able to keep my hair long as I age.
Are you getting the tatt's too?

I would go for it. I think as long as the hair is healthy and well cared for, and the clothes and image match, it can be a good look.

At 31, I started seeing greys... I got a tattoo a few years ago and was one of the unlucky few that it created an allergy to a chemical in hair colors (ALL chemical hair colors, even temporary 'wash out' ones!). During the color process I am fine, but for some reason as soon as I go to wash my hair afterwards with real shampoo it starts.. itching, hives and horrendous swelling. The last time made me go to a medical clinic. The Dr there told me that the next time could put me into full anaphylaxis. She told me that I am NOT to color my hair, and even avoid perms because that could trigger the reaction as well. Worse, the swelling, itching and hives lasted 3 WEEKS the last two times I tried to do something... I got highlights done for my 35th bday 2 years ago and that's what sent me over the edge.

So coming from someone who CAN'T color her hair... Love your silver/grey/white as it comes.. Some of us don't have the option :(.

Other people first noticed that my hair was turning white when I was 18! Now, at 34 my hair is more than 50% white. I started using henna. But, someday I am going to let it go white.

I actually love my salt and pepper hair, and I'm trying to grow it out to my collarbones. That's pretty much where I was length-wise last year, but I made the mistake of adopting a conditioner-only, no shampoo method of washing my hair. The white streaks eventually turned green due to the minerals in my well water. So, I'm back to growing it in, but advise anyone with well-water to pay careful attention to subtle changes in the tint of your grey.

I think long, silver-grey hair looks beautiful on older people! When I hit that era of my life I hope to have hair to my feet! (I am growing it out now after years of short hair).

I think a lot depends on what colour grey you are. I started going grey in my 30's. But my grey is kind of salt and pepper which is rather aging I feel so I dye it. I have been everything from platinum blonde to jet black in my time. I love changing my hair colour.

Now if your hair is silver then that can look lovely. I have seen some older ladies with beautiful long silver hair.

I think the long hair is your decision, based on how you like the way it looks when you let it grow out. I stopped colouring 5 years ago and was pleased to find that beneath the dye my hair was salt and pepper. I keep it various stages of short, and have never regretted stopping colouring. I get lots of compliments. Go for it!
  • My mum went from ebony black to dirty grey by 40 and coloured her's pillar box red (and has done for the last 21 years!) Now mine is losing it's colour, but I'm auburn turning silver. IF it stays silver, I'll not colour as the money and time wasted seems bizzare. I won't do plastic surgery either..grow old gracefully...well that's the plan!
  • Welllllll mine is WHITE. I was thinking of color again.

Ii am 53 years young, I quit coloring my hair about 3 years ago, got tired of all the touch ups. Mine is solid white, and I keep it about shoulder length. I say go for it. It is too much maintenance once it gets to a certain point, and I figure after coloring for almost 30 years, it was time to embrace the white! I get a lot of compliments on my hair! I have tried to grow my longer, but it drives me crazy, so I found a length that works for my hair, and my life style.

To me it depends on the grey. I'm a natural light golden blonde, but in my late 30s the gold started leaving, replaced by a muddier color. Not attractive at all, so I started coloring it back to my natural younger color. Over the past 7 years the muddy color has been joined by beautiful bright silver hairs. They are GORGEOUS. When I color they end up (because they don't take color) being highlights of silver in my blonde hair. I'm just waiting until the silver hair is a high enough percentage to stop coloring and let them shine.

I am 75, and have silver hair. I wish I could grow it long, so I could put it in a pony-tail or a bun, or twist it up, jn the back, but my arms are not able to get up there to take care of it, so it stays short. Grow it long and gray and enjoy it. :flowerforyou:

I stopped having long hair when I was about 15 years old. But as someone with more grey than brown I can tell you I love silver hair. I wanted it when I was young and it seems it won't get totally silver. I generally don't care for older women with long hair. But I've seen a number of fine looking older women with long silver hair. I love silver hair on women. It shows strength and character if the woman happens to possess those things. I'd go with whatever look appeals to you and whatever look you want to have. When you're older, you can afford to be who you want to be, say what you want to say and do what you want to do and not have to explain yourself or apologize.

My hair started to have a little grey in it when i was in my 20's. I used to pay to have my hair white back then.. now I could have it for free and I hate it. Personally i feel much older when my grey is showing. Thank goodness my daughter is a beautician!!

This is me, I didnt make the connect with having highlights and was checking my head for critters  when I mentioned this to my stylist she is the one who told me never to have them anymore.

I have grey/blonde hair now and loving it, hated having to wait for the coloring to grow out though

Grey hair is fine (I used to color it but I'd have to do it about every 2 weeks if I did it now) but since I've gotten older my hair is not as thick as it used to be - that's a bummer and that is why I don't have it as long as I would love for it to be!!

I'm 31, so not a senior yet, but I have salt-and-pepper hair that falls past my waist. I expect my hair will be completely white before my 40th birthday. If you have a nice shade of grey, I think long grey or white hair can be very beautiful! (Although I may be biased, since I've known I'd end up in this situation for a long time, I found my first grey hair at 10, and had a noticeable streak in my first driver's license photo at 16.)
