Pizza at the GYM?!

I have a gym membership at Planet Fitness. Apparently, they have a pizza night once a month. Last night, the gym was packed and people for waiting for machines because of "pizza night".
Does anyone else find this completely detrimental and kind of gross??

After running and sweating like crazy in a room that legitimately smells like feet, the LAST thing I want to do is eat 500 calories of greasy pizza next to all the "natural thin" people! It was infuriating to me!

I think it's great that $10 a month gets me access to a ton of gym equipment close to my home/work as well as these added perks for members but what about a SALAD bar once a month!? Or free smoothies?

Do other gyms do this? What do you guys think about it?

That seems really bizarre and counter-productive to me.... I mean, if it's meant as a monthly reward ('You've done great for the month so here's your reward, you've earned it!) it fails. It's more a temptation than anything.

Sounds to me like they want to keep people fat and going to their gym!

You should suggest the salad bar option! Otherwise I can't believe a gym would do that

They have to keep people fat so they keep coming back and to pay their own wages! That would make me sick , I hate smells when I am working out at my high level on intensity! I probably would not be able to keep my mouth shut, I would def. suggest salads, smoothies, wraps anything but PIZZA!!!
  • My mom goes there. When she said they have pizza & doughnuts i was like what??? then i thought about it & it seems to me that they want to keep their clientele!!....thats the only possible reason they would do that.

i agree with everyone. the pizza night sounds very unappealing to me. You are completely right. who would want to eat in a sweaty place where you've worked so hard? it just doesn't make sense. and i know that feeling of watching skinny people indulge themselves in whatever they want to eat. i would stay away before they try to pressure you!!! ugh can't stand those people..
  • remember that places like this have clients who have different goals than we do. Many guys out there go to use the weights and are not watching calories. There are also people who go to the gym for exercise but are not on diets (or this lifestyle change) and allow themselves to eat pizza and donuts.

Just a thought as I dig into my chicken breast and broccoli dinner.
  • At my gym they have a group "birthday party" once a month for whoever had a birthday that month and they serve cake and ice cream! I just run with my dog at the dog park on those days!!!! AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHH, I love cake!!! :noway:

That is nuts!! Today I laughed when scanning my card at the Y because right there is a fund raiser selling $1.00 candy bars. It was for a good cause but come on! Who is going to buy?? I just donated $$... (I couldn't even bring myself to bring them home for th kids as they have enough right now from St. Nicholas day and left overs from Halloween!)

Well, if you gym membership is only $10.00 that is something to be grateful for!!

I do agree with blakgarnet where people are not on a eating program/diet , I myself eat an occasional caramel roll and usually scrape the top off a pizza because yeast does not agree with me BUT to set up something as high calorie and not to mention the smell while working out I think is really STUPID!! Sorta like settin up a bar full of booze at an A.A meeting!!! DoNot get it!!!!!

Seems counter-productive to me as well, and kinda gross. The last place I would want to eat pizza (and man, I love pizza) is in a gym full of sweaty people.

in my opinion it doesn't matter so much that it's pizza. what bothers me is that they are serving food at a gym... a place people go to sweat... and stink... a place that people really should not be eating anything, all those germs lingering.. ugh. Not to mention, it seems unsafe to me to have food around gym equipment.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks this is crazy, unsanitary and generally gross!

True, not everyone is watching calories but it's just a very unhealthy thing to see at a gym. I'd rather a reward be coupons or gift certicates to pizza places if you must but donuts and pizza literally in front of me on a treadmill doesn't make sense.

I'm totally grateful I pay such a small membership fee but I'm tempted everywhere I look to eat bad foods. The gym should be a safe place! I shouldn't even have to say that! :noway:

I will get off my soap box now. Good luck on your goals this week, everyone! :glasses:

I know it sounds funny or weird kind of like an escalator at a 24 hour fitness gym hillarious or ludicrous. Maybe it is a motivational tool to encourage you to workout more, so that once in a while you can indulge if you will in high fatty foods without it being a big deal in your fitness goals that is, so you don't need to feel you have to be permanently detached from eating those sorts of food every once in a while, sort of like a confirmation of all your hard work leading to an indulgence in unhealthy foods without it leading to a crash in your commitment, also it does give you incredible fortitude to resist in a setting where it is free & you weren't expecting to see such a contradictary message in a Healthy location well minus the steroids.lol

But, remember it's 24 hour fitness, so the people need a little break on their legs.

i know why they do this. so i was watching the travel channel or was it the news? o it was the news... and there is this guy who owns a pizza shop. and i guess he started handing out fliers at a local gym... and the gym owners told them to go away because it didnt promote heathly eating. and the guy decided to make a pizza diet and calculated different toppings that went with the pyramid and he actually lost weight... his blood pressure was a lot lower... soooo now i guess gyms are taking that and making a day so that u can eat something u like but also work it off...

I've got an even better one for you. I work out at the Y. It's a small facility in a lower income area, and the socializing area is right in front of all the fitness equipment. Every single day there are cookies, cake, coffee, donuts, or some other variety of junk food sitting out on the tables in front of the fitness equipment for anyone to take. Today they had cream cheese pastries out. Then you walk through the front of the facility, and every Saturday they get HUGE donation bags of day-old bread from Panera Bread, pastries, bagels...and it's all free for the taking. On Fridays they get donations of cakes, cookies, pies, more bread/bagels from a local grocery store. They literally beg people to take it home because they have so much they can't even give it all away. I could have a different kind of cake and bagel every day of the week if I wanted to! And it's all really great quality stuff too.

My gym is run by a hospital and they have cafe in the entry area. The menu is ok, but I've always wondered why it isn't healthier and why it doesn't have nutrition information available. They have a registered dietitian on staff.

Eewww! All the stink of sweaty people and the smell of grease from pizza, ugh! Well, my 24Hour Fitness is in a shopping center. The gym is directly between a Mexican food place that makes homemade tortillas and an Italian restaurant that has pizza, pasta, you name it. AND, there is a Jack In the Box in the same parking lot. It is ssooo hard to walk out of the gym after a killer workout and smell fresh tortillas, chicken parmigiana, and curly fries when you are starving and trying to be really good. Not to mention, it is late, you are tired, and the fiance next to you is whining that he's hungry and is CRAVING an Ultimate Cheeseburger with Curly Fries Jumbo sized!

But anyhoo, pizza night at the gym is pretty counter productive. There should be at least a light pasta bar, salad bar, or a smoothie night!

My gym does that. They usually do it the last thursday of the month. If you dont have great will power find out if they have a specific day or date that they do it each month so you can have an off day or do something at home instead.
  • I actually didnt join Planet fitness for that reason... I am however tempted to and just not go on those days... 10.00 a month is a good deal.
