Hi
I know this may sound dumb but I was wondering if I should be happy and encouraged at my weight loss. I lost 8 pounds in week one , 3 pounds in week two, and 3 pounds in week three. it just seems as I need to loose a lot it is a slow process . I would be very interested to hear others views on this as this was one of the reasons for joining this community as I am not great at live meetings as I am a bit shy.

I think that sounds entirely normal, everyone loses a bigger amount the first week as it will be a lot of water loss - from such a massive change from eating lots, to cutting right down.

Eventually that weight loss will slow down to 1lb or 2lb a week but the most important thing is to keep going even if you plateau for a while.

Yes, you should be happy and encouraged!

That's actually quite a rapid weight loss - which is pretty normal for the first few weeks - and you should not be disappointed if it levels off to 2 pounds a week or less. There may be some weeks you don't lose at all, and that's normal, too.
  • I think you are doing FANTASTIC! Wish mine was as fast! :)

As long as you are doing it the healthy way it seems like it would be good. Usually it slows down after a few weeks. 1-2 pounds a week is average I think.

Way to go! and Keep it up!

You should be VERY encouraged by 14 pounds in 3 weeks. That is a lot to lose in a short time span. I believe the average weight loss is about 1-2 pounds per week with a little higher the first week. Just keep plugging away and just think of where you can be by October, November, December, etc. Just take it one day at a time and keep moving forward!

That's fantastic! Honestly, you should expect it to be a bit slower now that you're a few weeks in. Average is 1-2 pounds per week after the first few weeks. It truly is a long process but if you do it this way you will be less likely to gain it all back because you are changing your lifestyle, not just going for the quick fix that you can't stick with long-term.

Good for you and congratulations on the start of a new life!!!! It's not easy, but it's SOOO worth it!

14 lbs. in 3 weeks is not a sustainable weight loss, slow and steady wins the race. A 1 to 2 lbs. a week average is where you want to be for the best long term results. I have been on my journey for 38 months now and have lost 311 lbs. that breaks down to about 2 lbs. a week. Have I had weeks where I lost more? Of course but there has also been those weeks I didn't lose any... Take it day by day continue to eat right and get moving and let the weight come off at a good steady pace..... Best of Luck

I think your doing great with your weightloss! Losing weight the healthy way is a long journey. Usually if your pretty overweight initially you'll lose a lot of weight just like you have (the 8lbs), however as your weight loss progresses this will decrease as you have seen with your last two weeks. This is perfectly fine! Your on the right track!
  • Thats a great loss, I think most people would be very pleased with those results :) keep up the good work. x

It is better to lose slowly for numerous reasons:

    1. Gives you time to adjust to eating better rather than a quick fix - those who lose it slowly tend to keep it off.
    2. It tends to be better for your body especially your skin as it can keep up with the weight loss.

Also think how long it took you to put it on. I have 100lbs to lose in total and aim to lose it in 100 weeks. Also instead of setting a large goal split it up.

Eg I want my bmi to go to .....
1 stone down or weight targets. My next one is 3 stone and then will be hitting 199 which is only 4 lbs behind and I'll be going for the big 50.

    hope this helps

Sounds very normal - first week high, then anything from 0.5-3 lbs for a while. Do not expect more and stick to it and you will get where you want to go.
The forum are a wealth of info but you need a strong BS filter too. Good luck.

As everyone else has said, you're doing quite well! It's also true that the amount you lose per week tends to be quite rapid at first due to water weight loss and then levels off.

It can be tough to realize just how long it's likely to take to lose as much as you want to lose, but the weight will come off if you follow your plan. You didn't put it on overnight and it's not going to come off overnight.

Try not to focus so much on the scale. Take some measurements (you can record them on MFP and no one but you ever see them). take a few pictures, focus on how your clothes are fitting and how your fitness is improving. All of these measurements can be huge motivations, especially on weeks where the scale seems stuck.

Most importantly, you want to keep this weight off, right? So keep in mind that a big part of what you'll be doing over the next several months is to learn better eating habits, how to get a little exercise into the mix when/if you are physically able, and how to develop a healthier relationship with food. All of those things take time and are essential for keeping it off.

    Congratulations on your early progress!
  • Thanks a lot , Really appreciate your comments , I seem to eat more now but of the right food and I am starting to feel better in myself. Thanks again

Appreciate all weightloss and at first it's a lot more water weight you'll loose...eventually it's going to be strictly fat! Keep up the good work! :flowerforyou: If you'd like to add me for support! I don't mind:wink:

I think it is normal for most people, when I first started, I have literally been losing small weights each week, anything from 0lbs to 2. I have lost 10lbs in 7 weeks, slower than I hoped, but losing all the same so I am happy. I was worried about the fact that mine was slow and you seemed to be worried that yours was fast lol. I think mine was down to the fact that was pretty much eating healthily anyway before, just not enough or at the right times. But if we try and work out how our bodies are going to act on this journey, we will go crazy. So my advice I guess is, just enjoy the loss and seeing the reward for all your hard work. I know I am xxx

The slower you lose, the more used you get to being lighter. More time to get used to your new physical abilities, as well as eating less - mentally, you're a lot less likely to put it all back on once you've lost it.

Think of it less as a race and more as an ongoing life choice - you're choosing to be healthier, and losing weight is just an excellent bonus.

man, I miss the days of 3 lb/wk losses!

Honestly, 14 lbs in 3 weeks is great, but realize that you will slow down the more you lose, so don't expect it to continue. Just remember that you are making a life change and it will take time. You didn't get 137lb overweight overnight, so don't expect to lose it that quickly either!

However, sounds like you are doing great! Keep it up and congrats!
