What does fitness mean to you?

We're all coming from such different spots in our fitness journey. What does fitness mean to you? Does it mean a goal weight? Does it mean endurance? Speed? Flexibility? Being able to horse around with the kids? What is your goal and what does it mean for you?

Being able to physically still do the sports and physical challenges I like to do regardless of my age. I still run fast, play football, kickbox, compete with kids half my age, and can last with my daughter when it comes to physical play.

Oh and I look good doing it.

For me, it means getting back in my best running shape, getting back to where I was. And getting back to feeling comfortable in a bikini. My husband wants me in one badly.

For me, it means reaching a healthy weight/BMI & healthy body fat %. It also means self-confidence, and the ability to do moderate activity without getting winded.

To me, good fitness is ageless. You can't tell if someone is 60 or 30 because they keep up, play hard, and are in shape. It's not about vanity for me, but about health. I'm 47. People often think I'm around 30 because I don't sit around eating cream puffs all day. This weekend I was surfing, bridge jumping into the water, swimming with the kids and horsing around while all the old people (mid-thirties were busy getting drunk and sitting on their *kitten* doing nothing). That's the difference. It's a mind-set about being active. Acting your age is an excuse to be fat and lazy. The adults in the pool playing with the kids is the winner. The ones sitting on the side watching, well, are missing out on life.

It's not about any one thing, but about a whole bunch of things. I no longer want to look a certain way, I want to be strong and fit. The older I get though, the harder it is. It is effortless for most kids. It is very effortful, lol, at my age. But, it's ok. I love when my kids workout with me. I am teaching them fitness and nutrition in the process so as they get older, they will remember some of these things, and how their crazy dad was up at 4:30 am every morning doing crazy workouts, and then later, taking them surfing. Hopefully, it will rub off.

First and foremost, being able to do something today/next week/next month that I couldn't do yesterday... being faster or stronger than I was.

Secondly, being healthier (leaner, stronger heart, etc) than I had been.

    oh, BTW... good question!

When someone asks, "Are you fit?" The only correct answer is, "Fit for what?"

Ditto. That is all it means.

fitness = pain
I don't like it but I take it as a necessity, I want to be back in shape (I am just 38 and I was easily out of breath ! Not good)
and next summer : bikiny body :glasses:

Fitness for me is not being at risk for diabetes, heart disease, stroke, hypertension and high cholesterol (all of which run in my family) and just feeling good and comfortable with my body. Looking good would be an added bonus.

Being fit for me is being able to compete in things I want to without being out of breath, being able to play with my niece and run around all day without having to take a break, not feeling like I'm held back from doing anything because I physically can't. I want to be like this till I'm much much older and be able to live a long and healthy life!

    Yeah, I think at first.

I think I equate it with being able to do more with less pain. lol

for me it is being a healthy body weight and also being able to do what I want fitness wise. So if I want to cycle to the next city (12 miles away) and back I can, without thinking about it (something I'm planning to do in the next few weeks but it is something that I need to practise for). To have a strong body to be proud of.
  • Just turned 45 last week and "fitness" for me no longer means an exact weight/size/etc. It means feeling comfortable in my own skin (and that does include within a certain ballpark weight range:-)...It means having strong core muscles to protect myself as I age gracefully, I hope. It means looking like I'm still living and ENJOYING life and not like I've given up and just accepting the status quo or worse yet being stuck in yesteryear. PEOPLE .... there is no law that once you reach a certain age that you have to take on the role of "old frump" :noway: My mom is my inspiration....she is 67 and looks much younger than some of her 50 something friends! I do not want to sound "stuck on myself" but I love to be with my 19 year old daughter and have people say "you can't be old enough to be her mom?" and then see their shocked faces when I say ...."she's my baby! My 26 1/2 and 24 year old sons are grown and gone!"
