I think I would like to start running.

From what I have read, it seems like C25K is a good option for beginners. I'll have to do it on the treadmill since I get home after dark most days. I do have a good pair of shoes that are supportive (my feet overpronate). Is there anything else I would need to get started? Any tips for beginners? Thanks a bunch :flowerforyou:

Come join us in the C25K group: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/30-couch-to-5k-running-program-c25k?page=2

You'll find lots of people starting at nearly the same time, tips & tricks etc. :)

    Good luck!

Don't overdo it. Take it slowly at first, and just do the 3 runs a week as it will probably take your body a little while to get used to it. (I'm on week 2 and definitely feeling it!) Good luck!

Can you not run in the dark? I've just discovered head torches. You angle them to light up just in front of you- you'll still be able to run outside.
  • There are several good smartphone apps for C25K. I use Get Running and really like it. You can listen to music or an audio book and it still keeps track of your intervals.
  • I just started the Couch to 5K last week. I think it's seems to be a really great way to get started and I would recommend it.

I love running in the dark! I have a Mountain Hardwear Geist Vest that is highly reflective and I take along my Petzl headlamp and some pepper spray. It's much more motivating than a treadmill.
  • Jessica - Good for you & congratulations. It looks like you have a lot of support with the C25K already, and I would take advantage of that.

One bit of advice about advice: Using message boards for motivation and to read and share common experiences is GREAT. Using them to get advice on how much to train, what & when to eat, whether or not to stretch, etc., is definitely NOT. There is a ton of really good, reliable, tested information already out there - reputable web sites & books are the way to go. (For someone just starting, I recommend Jeff Galloway, by the way.)
