too much protein?

I'm confused about the protein consumption I'm supposed to be having daily.. either I am allotted too little or one baked chicken breast really does have my daily limit. If I'm -17 on protein but still have over 700calories left for the day.. is that protein setting me back even if I never go over my limit for anything else? Keeping in mind that I run 2.5miles every other day and do resistance training on my non-run days. Also, I am a night-shift worked in a deployed area.. so my breakfast usually consists of dinner food (baked chicken and potatoes, salad, etc).
So the question is - will too much protein set me back eventhough everything else was fine?
