HRM Doubts

So after looking at various workouts and their "calorie stats" for an average individual, I am wondering if my HRM is giving me too high of a caloric burn. Does anyone else know how accurate it really is? Is BodyMedia more accurate than the HRM? My heart rate is about 85 bpm during resting state and if I were to wear it all day, it would give me an inaccurate calorie burn of over 1600 cals (I am 5'7" and weigh 125 lbs). I know that this is inaccurate because I had the BodyGem test done and my average daily burn (resting) is 1280 per day.

I am considering buying something else, but was unsure what the general consensus was.......I could also deduct cals each time I workout.....

Thank you MFP friends!

First, you may want to go back to square one and make sure it is programmed and set up right for you. 85 is a fairly HIGH resting heart rate. Did you LAY DOWN and stay that way for like 1/2 and hour to see how low it really gets? Mine is 53 or 54. If the rest of your settings are based off of it, then it may have your aerobic levels set too low for you. What kind of HRM do you have? I only use Polar HRMs. Here's an article that talks about the testing, accuracy and reputation of Polar which explains why I use them. Not all HRMs are created equal.

I have the Polar F60 (purple one). I am usually standing up when I take my resting HR, but my HR is normally in the 80s when I am at the dr office and I even had my bf double check it for me to ensure that the Polar was not off as far as my HR goes. Can I change my settings for what is considered as aerobic? When I run, my HR gets up to 175 at times which seemed really high, but I checked with other people and their HR was high at first. It has definitely been gradually lowering, but it is taking a long time.

My RHR is also in the 80s. It has always been that high (and at some points higher), so it is definitely possible. I also have trouble with my heart rate soaring near 170 during strenuous exercise. I am working on getting these numbers down.

Not sure re your model buy mine is programmable. Your RHR should be done laying down and resting. It is what you use ti calculatewhat your ranges should be set at.
