I guess you guys are right, my 65 pound weight loss was not backed by published research. So maybe I'm still fat. I should've known better than to offer up an opinion. I'll just continue being me and leave the expert stuff up to you folks.

Lot's of people here have lost that or more. You are not so special. Also, many, including me, didn't have that much to lose. You are wearing that like a badge of honor that somehow gives you advice dispensing credentials. There are lot's here who have studied the physiology and nutritional aspects of weight loss and are very knowledgeable. You might do well to listen and learn.

You tried one way and it worked for you. Great! But that doesn't make you an expert. You are dispensing advice that is inaccurate. That has been pointed out to you but in your prideful egotism you don't seem capable of accepting that. Continue with whatever you feel is best for you. Others will do the same.

I was busy trolling and missed the big fight. Who won? Did we get a verdict?

I would like to point out that the general consensus is to do weights first, then cardio. The reason, as I understand it, is that weight lifting is an anaerobic exercise, which burns glycogen. When you follow it up with cardio, you burn even more glycogen, which your body then has to spend energy to replenish (really raising your metabolism).

I used to do cardio first and now that I've switched I'm really seeing great gains. Don't want to start another pissing contest. Do a bit of research on it and see what's best for you. I just remember that I didn't know there was a difference and I wished somebody had suggested it to me earlier.

Best of luck on your quest!

I started training at the gym 6 days a week.. 1 day off. I do 40-60 min on the elliptical to start always and then I do weight training to gain muscle to burn more calories/fat on the machines everyday and walk at least 30-60min with my dog.. I switch it up if my muscle are too sore from the day before..

I'm 5'8, 170lb trying to loose 20lb to start I take in 1500-2000 cal a day and end up with 1000-1200 average (AFTER BURNING MY ADDITIONAL CALORIES OFF I EARNED THROUGH EXERCISE) mostly through wild salmon, cans of tuna, cottage cheese, cereal popcorn and vegetables.. I picked up a whey protein powder tonight that is 110cal and 25g protein to feed the muscles. I plan on taking 50g of protein from this product daily to feed and repair the muscle. It fits in my macros and I don't go over..

Is this a good idea for my plan or will I gain weight with the powder? Is there anything I should change to increase weight loss?

    Thanks.
*DISCLAIMER - I don't claim to be an expert, and I'm not interested in getting in a peeing contest over who is right or wrong. Take what I say FWIW or disregard it completely* :)

Now that I have that out of the way....

Protein builds/repairs muscle, muscle burns more calories than fat as you just exist.

I don't think just adding protein powder will in itself make you gain weight. I take mine after workouts and/or before bed to let my body do the repairing. I don't take it before workouts because I want the blood to be able to get to my muscles, not at my stomach busy with the digestion process.

I did a similar workout plan to yours and lost my weight (89 lbs so far) in just over a year. Worked for me.

In regards to your last question: I say restrict the carbs. Carbs turn into glucose almost immediately (muscle fuel) and are readily digestable. Protein is slower to digest, and it actually takes more energy to digest protein than other foods, so it's win-win. If your body has no readily accessible glucose from carbs, it'll break down fat to get the energy. That's how I understand it in my own words anyway.

    Good luck.

not gonna argue here. Someone posted that you won't gain muscle while on a calorie deficit. Is that true?

Oh boy. Now you've done it. You might have been just as well off asking if vegans smell like compost.

People are very passionate about their beliefs. Let's just hope they don't notice. I'll run a distraction.
Hey! Should all organized religion be criminalized? What are your thoughts on abortion?

it's almost impossible to create muscle on a calorie deficit. The excepts are noob gains (people who have never lifted before can gain 1-2 lbs) or if they are morbidly obese. Other than that, it's impossible to create an anabolic state in order for your body to create new lean body mass. With that said, this is the only study that would suggest the ability to gain muscle on a calorie deficit.

Well you won't gain muscle but you will be able to maintain it. Also, you are fairly active, so you have to ensure you are eating enough. Based on your stats, i would be eating around 1900-2200 total calories. The biggest thing I push for fat loss is really concentrating on heavy weight training (failing around 8 reps). If you do that and then some HIIT, that will really help fat loss.
