I work out on the ellip with my eyes closed. Dont know if anyone laughs, cuz well...........my eyes are closed
Oh and when I have a migraine, I wear my sunglasses day and night for a few days....so I sure wouldnt laugh at you0 -
Would it help you to use an MP3 player w/earphones? I always feel more "alone" with myself when I do that. If it works for you, it might make it easier for you to ignore the fact that others are around.
If it is any consolation, everyone else there is busy working out, so they are not going to notice you unless you fall on your face while you are running on the treadmill.:noway:0 -

which probably will happen one of these days... i cant walk in a straight line let alone run... lol bad images lol... but i do use headphones and i sometimes zone out but i start singing and people look at me like why is this girl singing nsync lol0 -
Definitely have to Zone Out baby! Try not to concern yourself with anybody else.
They are all focused on themselves anyway!
The cardio machines at my gym mostly have individual TVs so that makes it easy to "Plug in & Zone Out".
Otherwise I watch the big screen TVs with my earphones in.
I don't have an iPod (only person in the world!??), so in the weight areas, I really focus on myself and ignore all the dudes grunting and groaning while lifting their monster weights! I focus on my light weights, happy in the progress I've made.0 -
I go the TV route as well - but maybe you should try taking some of the classes offered? Find something that makes you really really uncomfortable like Zumba or dance aerobics. Once you can learn to be comfortable in there you can do anything
Also, you will realize that there are always people who look at least as goofy as you do, or if there aren't you will realize that they aren't really paying attention to you and how you look. Find someone you think looks goofy working out and then ask yourself - do I really care how they look? Am I focusing on it? Do I think they shouldn't be here? .... likely you will realize that you really couldn't care less! And you can then realize that the same thing goes to people looking at you!
Another option - is there somewhere some days that you can run outside? You can sing all you want then0 -
I used to bring a portable DVD player and bungee cord it to the machine so keep me distracted. Do what you got to do!0

I zone out. I make a mix on my Ipod for instant I time out songs if I want to run a 5k, 10k, or half marathon. I have to be in front of a mirror so i can see myself, which keeps me motivated for some reason. I like to watch TV, but nothing that you have to concentrate on too much more so music videos. I also enjoy picking one person in the gym and watching them. Creepy I know, but it helps for some reason. It's so much easier to listen to music and concentrate on one thing then it is to be looking around and losing concentration. Once you zone out you almost don't notice you are running. I keep my pace at a jogging to I don't become too tired and don't notice. Once you can get of hold of zoning and covering up the time and miles you will look up and see 6 miles gone by.
Just breath normally and clear your head. Use running as a time to just stop thinking.
Good Luck!0 -
i do all my cardio outside so I don't have to deal with doing cardio in the gym.0

so i went to try some of your tips and this is how it went...
1. closing my eyes to work out made me fall... i literally tripped over myself and almost ate it... what a way to get everyones attention expecially the cute guy running next to u lol...
2. music player does work... but i cant find a way that i just completely zone out... i watched football on their tvs... still didnt work...
i think on monday im going to take a class... maybe if i dont know im working out will work better... well without being able to concentrate i did a half mile and just stopped cause i got frustrated...0 -
Try a cycle class. You can burn like 650 calories in ONE HOUR! I cycle three days a week and just love it. Advice if you choose to do this bring a cushion seat, towel, and water bottle. Your butt will get soar the first week or two, but it is worth it, because the caloire burn is amazing!
As for running keep trying listen to songs with a good running beat and turn it up. Run outside by yourself or with a friend might also make a difference.
Keep trying and Good luck!0 -
Also - if you like to read or like something that keeps your attention, instead of music try a book on MP3. Most libraries have them to borrow free online. They keep my focus and make time fly while I swim.0

I completely understand. I am not technically inclined, so these new-fangled, I-podicums with TVs and satellites, that can tell you the humidity in Timbucktoo at 23 minutes past 12:30 just don't work for me. Sooo, I wear a baseball cap. I fold the sides of the bill in so they kinda curve down and wear my hat really low over my eyes. I can look straight ahead and no one can see what I am looking at.
Well, that was when I could use treadmills and ellipticals; now, I swim, so I have gotten over my self-consciousness and LET IT ALL HANG OUT!!!!!
Then jump in the pool and look around to make sure no one saw me....lol0
