Can it be possible that someone is just not able to run far???
I joined the gym a while ago and am losing weight through dieting.
I go to the gym 3-4 times a week and tend to do interval training so 10 mins treadmill, 10 mins cycling, 10 mins rowing then weights. I extend these when i feel able too.
I have tried running in the past but seem to hit a brick wall, i run out of energy, or breath!
Last night i got up to 1.5k before my body gave in!! I managed to get up to 2.7k with a combination of jogging and walking.
Will my body every get used to running more or are some people just not made to be runners?!?!

If you are new to running it's a good idea to follow a walk/run programme, usually more walking than running in the initial stages.
You need to get your body used to running slowly so that you don't burn out or injure yourself.
Have a look at couch to 5k, that is a great way to begin.0 -

It's your speed that's killing you. Most people can cover most distances if they adjust their pace accordingly.
Also agree with the suggestion to try the C25K program.0 -

Someone gave me this advice early on in my running career and it made a huge difference for me. The first mile I ever "ran" took me almost 15 minutes.
Also, if I can run, anyone can run. I'm 6'3'' 260lbs and recently ran my first half-marathon. Just stick with it and don't be embarrassed to go slow.0 -
You have to condition your body to running, even if you have been very active doing other physical activities. Yes, you can get past your "wall" and run further distances, you just have to build slowly. Like others have mentioned, a program like C25K may be a good idea. You will probably think it seems easy at first, but try to follow the plan as written. You also want to make sure you have a manageable pace....speed typically comes after you have been running for awhile. If you really want to run, make sure you have good shoes and that you have patience (you don't want to do too much, too soon, because that often leads to injuries). Good luck!0

i used to believe that the whole world could run except for me. c25k changed my life.0 -
I am doing the C25K program at the moment, I am about to start w4, I have huge mental block about running solidly for 5 mins, BUT I am just going to try until I do, and just like all the other weeks that I was intimidated by if I do it enough it will happen and I will get better.
You can too - Just start :happy:0 -
before my first 5K I trained on a treadmill. as others have said..pick a slow pace, one that you could walk if you had to, Jog this pace for as long as you can...then a bit longer. each day you will get better but do not increase the speed for a while...maybe not even until after that first 5K
this worked for me
have fun organized 5k races are FUN0 -
I just started running in March.... mostly doing intervals for a long time..... I did a 10k at the end of march.... walked a little less than half of it because I didn't hydrate enough and cramped up! OUCH! -- But I am currently training for a half marathon (following a c2half type of program with a group training from my gym) - I can now run 30 minutes straight no problem.... It is about pace. People who are new to running want to just go out there and run all fast, but you can't do that. The trick, which these programs help you do, is stay in your fat burning zone (by running slower) so you can run longer (vs cardio zone which tires you out more quickly).... You have to build up.... But seriously if I can run, anyone can.

Ditto all the above advice! Especially about following the plans and not going mad and injuring yourself... my CV fitness was ahead of my legs being used to running-ness, and by carrying on too far last week when I got excited by the fact I felt like I could keep going, I overloaded my knees and had to take a week off and stick to non load bearing things - grumpiest week ever! I used to hate running, but now LOVE IT! :-D0

Many years ago ( high school) all i did was run. I was in cross country for 5 years. When i first started back again 2 years ago i got shin splints and wasent able to do much. A month later i started taking Cipro ( infection) and it caused me such extreme pain in my shins doing nothing that i quit trying to run ( jog i should say). Found out after going to the Medication website that if you have an existing shin or achilles issue ( shin splints) that this med could cause permanent damage to those areas. So i quit.
Fast forward to this June when i started to lose weight again i started trying to jog again...on the treadmill only and in intervals...walk 4 min/ jog 1 minute and bam the pain came back. I found out i will always have the pain in my shins...no matter how slow i go or infrequently...and i LOVE to jog.
I do think that some people arent good at it...no matter how much they train for it...it may always be hard for them but , as long as you have no pain or injury i would keep going slow and build up to it. Even now every once in a while when i am fast walking my 5k on the treadmill i give in and do a lil slow jogging. I love to do 5Ks but i just walk them for the most part and throw a minute or two of jog in there now and then....
Also i would save my cardio for after the strength training. Thats what i was told by several ppl , trainers in cluded.
GOod luck to you!0 -
Thank you so much for all your advice and i will try C25k. It's nice to know other people have been in my situation.
Funnily enough my husband is a marathon runner(he did 8 in 8 days!) and a triathlete!
Will let you know how i get on x0
