The medicine belongs to a class of drugs called biguanide category, which not only work to lower the blood sugar levels in the body but also work to treat the insulin resistance syndrome found in all diabetic patients.

I take metformin and I DON'T have diabetes. I take it because I take another medicine called Clozapine which ramps up my appetite like crazy. The metformin helps somehow (although I don't know how).
