Gaining weight

Hi everyone

I am new to myfitnesspal but have done Weight Watchers a lot in the past. I am trying to lose my baby weight (baby is 2!!) It is taking so long this time. I was starting to gain while doing Weight Watchers, so I thought I'd try myfitnesspal, which is great

I lost weight when I first did the Insanity program. Then it stopped. I have done Insanity the Asylum, and now doing a hybrid of the two. So I am quite active.

I have been eating just under my calories, but I have been eating most of my exercise calories.

I stepped on the scale this morning, and I had gained a pound!! I am so frustrated, I think I could cry!! Should I eat less of my exercise calories back?

Thanks!

Can you provide more information please?

    What are your stats (h/w)?
    How active are you?
What is your average calorie intake after eating exercise cals?
Do you use a food scale?
And how long has it been in between weigh-ins
specifically, you gained 1lb, over what course of time?

According to the Insanity diet guide the minimum amount of calories you should be eating is 1700. If you are eating less than that, eat more.

Also take into consideration, than unless you eat 3500 calories more than you burn, then the lb isn't fat. It's water weight. A body naturally fluctuates up to 5 lbs or more in a day.
  • I started weighing myself everyday a few months ago. I weigh at the same time everyday. It has been helpful to see what foods cause me to retain weight/water. It seems that, especially for women, weight can fluctuate daily quite a bit. Don't obsess about the number on the scale but do try to pinpoint what causes your weight to bounce up. 1 pound is really not much in the grand scheme. Good luck to you :)

    1lb is not weight gain.

It could be anything from you not going to the loo before you weighed yourself, your period, waterweight from too much salt, your scale not being level on your floor, weighing yourself with wet hair, weighing yourself after breakfast, weighing yourself after a heavy dinner the previous night, your body retaining water to help heal itself if you've started exercising more vigorously then you're use to... etc ...etc

1lb is your body doing what it does naturally. You fussing over 1lb is your mind telling you you're getting fatter when in fact your not. Don't obsess over one single pound. It's not worth it.

Weigh yourself no more then once a fortnight, and then the changes will show more of your actual weight loss/gain. If you must weigh everyday, keep a track of your own range of weight and get to know what's normal for you.

seriously? up to 5 lbs per day fluctuation? wow...I didn't know that. I have wondered the same thing as this person also and workout every day between 30 -60 min. Frustrating when the scale doesn't move, even more so when it goes up!

Sorry I should have posted more about myself. I am 5 feet 9 inches. I hover just above 200 pounds. I am quite active doing the Beachbody Insanity and Asylum. I am supposed to eat 1500 calories a day to lose 11/2 pounds a week. I eat almost all of my exercise calories, so I tihnk I eat around 2000 calories per day. We bought a new scale, so I wanted to compare it to the old one. I guess I could wait another week to see how that weight compares. I just hope that I am not eating too many calories in a day.

I also take my waist measurements and that went up a little as well.

    Thanks again!

Insanity and Aslum are Beach Body workouts by Shaun T. They have lots of tons cardio. It's the hardest workout I've ever done! I'm dripping in sweat at the end.

Oops I feel like an idiot! I went to update my weight. I must have started at 204 and went down to 202. I thought I started at 201. I guess I'll keep doing what I'm doing. Any suggestions would be helpful though!!

This always happens to me too when I am doing an intensive workout program. Right now I weigh 115 but on a heavy workout week where there is a lot strength training and cardio I will put on 2-3 lbs and be 118. If I want to know how much my "settling" weight is I have to stop doing any kind of strength training for a week or week and a half. I will almost always lose like 2 - 3 lbs from what I weighed during the intense workout. I say give yourself a week break from the workouts and see what your weight is. Then you'll know how much you need to lose :)

Edited: I just noticed the follow up comment that you had not actually gained so my response is no longer applicable

I really wouldn't worry about 1lb, this is probably just normal fluctuation. Don't forget to take your measurements too!

funny to hear about water weight... I learned that my body weight is 70% due to water. So at 160 pounds, my TBW (total body of water) is 110 pounds. So when you work out and build muscle, which one main ingredient to muscle is water, you will seem to be putting on weight, but its lean weight, not fat weight. AND THAT is why pictures are better than the scale....
