Use fresh herbs for flavour instead?

Totally agree - fresh herbs add tons of flavour and mean you really don't have to add salt! Also use natural sea salt and only use it for cooking. Half the amount you would normally use and don't add any other salt at the table. I also find using say flora on potatoes, ketchup or HP sauce - all of which contain salt - is enough to add a bit without drowning the food in salt. If you just try and cut salt out without something added in it will be harder. Personally I would avoid substituting it by using lo-salt type products. You need to re-train your palate and the substitutes are all chemical anyway. Better to change your palate using herbs etc - you will soon find that you need less. And always use half the amount you think you need. Good luck and let us know how you are getting on!

One thing I tried was cutting it out completely - everything goes bland for a while but you get used to it; then introduce a little bit back. Then wait for everyone to complain your cooking is too bland and you know you've kicked the habit.
