Help me with measurements...

I am puzzled at how to take measurements for myself. I’ve watched videos, I’ve read websites and I honestly have no idea if I’m doing it right.

Initially to get my waist measurement, I measured a few inches above my belly button the slimmest part of my waist right below the ribs and I got a 34 1/2. But I have a huge roll of flab right under there that lines up with my belly button and saw a how to video that said to measure that area so I did and got a 40.

So then I decided to measure the waist measurement on my favorite pair of jeans that fits perfectly and it’s 33 ½. These jeans sit just above my belly button, pretty much in the same spot I got the 40 inch reading on.

Someone, please tell me which of these readings is correct. I want to buy some clothing online but it’s hard when I literally have no idea what size to pick. :(

I cannot figure out how they get their measurements on size charts! I just bought two pairs of jeans in a 30...my waist is nowhere near that small! Not even close. Ordering clothes online, I just make sure they have a good return policy. I also frequently order two sizes and send one back.

Basically, for jeans, the "waist" measurement should be the upper one you took at 34.5". When a clothing chart mentions waist, that's typically what they mean, so that pants (that don't come up that high) are cut bigger than that. For dresses or shirts, the bust measurement is the most important.

i get my measurements done at the gym I go to by my trainer. the most common measurements taking for women are bust, waist and hips. for my bust she measures around the fullest part of my breast (level with my nipples). waist is measured from back to front with the measuring tape right at the height of my pelvic bone and around to the front to lay right over my belly button. hips are usually measured around the FULLEST part of the hips when standing feet together. on me...the measuring tape wraps around at the start of my pubic hair line. hopefully this helps. also...when buying clothes the the waist measurements are tricky....for shirts, blouses and dresses they usually go by your "NATURAL" waist measurements which is the measurement taken right below the rib cage. for jeans it is typically the lower waist measurement which is done around the belly button unless you like to wear the kinds of jeans, pants and skirts that come up to just under your boobies! :)

your welcome! I never trust clothing sizes. Depending on the brand... I wear everything between a 4 and an 8.

No kidding! I have clothes in everything from a dress that is a size 4 to a pair of jeans that is a size 12. And the kicker is, the dress and jeans are by the same designer! It's a wonder we don't all go mad trying to shop.

LOL...i think some companies label their clothes with smaller sizes to make us women feel good so we'll keep buying their brand!

I was curious so I did some measuring. My waist, right over my belly button (which is the smallest part on me) is 37". My size 10 jeans (which theoretically should be a 30" waist) that fit, have a waist measurement of about 32".

I'm picking up some new jeans today that I had on order that are a size 30. I'll be measuring those too LOL.
