Should I use protein shakes?

I'm a vegetarian and I get a decent amount of protein from veggie meats, peas and beans, but I rarely hit my daily protein goal.
I don't lift weights much, yet, but I'm wondering if I should get protein supplement for when I do start hitting the weights harder than I do right now. I know protein helps in repairing/recovering muscle and keeping lean body mass while losing fat (I think), but what are the other benefits worth noting?
My family doesn't have a lot of spare money right now so, how long does a big $15 tub of powder (from Wal-Mart) usually last? Just wondering because I don't want to be adding an additional $15 to our already high weekly grocery bill.

I go through about $15 tub per month. That is about 1 scoop a day. I only use it when I workout some weeks so it may last a bit longer. I like vanilla the best btw
It may be cheaper than what we first did, we were told glucosamine and fish oil would be good supplements-they are to help your bodies joints absorb a workout, so while we still take them I think getting enough protein is more important.
I also think, how many people have had good results without it? If it is going to be a hardship on your family I would at least try without?0 -

$15 a month doesn't seem too bad. I could maybe try it for a month and if I can't really tell any difference, never get it again.0 -

It's not necessarily something that you'll see instant physical changes. That would be like not taking your daily vitamins because they don't make you look different.
Protein definitely helps you feel more full (another benefit) and is a good supplement since you're not hitting your protein goals with food.0
