Hey all,

I am in the market for either a barbell or kettle bell to workout with at home or when traveling. What one weight should I get for an all purpose, all over workout? This is meant to supplament what I will do in the gym and I DON'T have room for a full set of weights.

Have you looked at TRX? It's body weight oriented and you can take it everywhere. Can do pretty much any exercise with it, and it weighs a lot less in your suitcase! And as you get stronger you won't have to worry about increasing your weight; you just adjust your position so that you're pushing/pulling/supporting more of your body weight to make it harder.

Well, neither is going to work for both home and travel.

I'd suggest getting a barbell/weights for home and maybe pickup a couple of resistance bands for the road.
  • Let me clarify: when i travel it's by car or train and I'm dragging significant equipment anyway, so a little kettle or barbell will be no issue
  • I would say a kettlebell. I just started training with one, using Laurn Brook's ipone/iPad app. Love it. All her excercises use just one kettle bell- though you may want a heavery one and a lighter one, because for excercises that use your legs more (swings, deadlifts etc.) you will be able to lift more. Kettlebell workouts use the whole body, and only require a small amont of space, and you get cardio as well as weightlifting- so it's perfect for traveling, if the weight of the bell isn't an issue.

I am addicted to kettle bell classes. I just saw this on Groupon. Seems pretty cool as far as being to adjust weights with one bell. http://www.groupon.com/deals/gg-reebok-toning-kettle-bell?c=all&p=16
