Cravings: Are they real or an excuse?

I crave coffee... if that counts?0

I used to have cravings because I was deficient in some minerals and vitamins. I fixed the deficiency, and the cravings are gone. So to answer your question in my case, the cravings were not an excuse.0

I think both. I've had intense cravings for ice before, and it was really difficult to ignore. In that case, it was anemia (I don't know why the body chooses ice instead of, say, liver and onions, but it does). And oh goodness it felt so good to eat it, you have no idea.
When I have cravings now for food they're not nearly so intense and I can usually find a decent substitute. When I don't (like the darn Cheetos I ate today), I'll admit I shouldn't have given in. And of course it's never as good as I expect it to be anyway.
ETA: forgot to mention the crazy cravings I had for meat... this was also when I was anemic but at least meat has iron, it made some sense! And the craving for ice was much more intense than the meat craving.0 -
