Water is one of the main substances in our bodies. Sooooo many things in our body depend on water to work right - water helps our body regulate itself and perform its essential functions. I don't remember all the specifics from biology class when I was in high school, but think of it like oil for a car - if you don't have enough, it's just not going to run as well as it should, and if you are too low for too long, it will just break down.

Due to people's consumption of pretty much everything but water (soda, juices, etc.), I've read (can't remember where...) that many people are actually dehydrated almost all the time, to a certain extent. Many of us don't know what it is like to actually drink as much water as we need on a continual basis. We do get some water from foods and from the other drinks, but not enough.
  • HMMM thanks.. for the knowledge.. just seems like all i have been trying to do is drink water..but ill keep at it thanks again.. merry xmas..

Lots of reasons. Help you feel full. Help remove toxins. Minimizes muscle soreness from exercise. Minimizes water retention. If your urine is pale or clear, you are probably getting enough water. If it is gold, you need more. If your feet and ankles or fingers are feeling swollen, you may be retaining water and need to keep pushing the water so your body stops hoarding it. Once you stop retaining water, you will feel better. I have a hard time with the water myself. Green tea is an acceptable substitute, so I drink it sometimes.

Water isn't the only way you get hydrated. Keep in mind that milk, fruits and veggies, soups, juice, sports drinks and decaf coffee and tea all count toward water intake so you CAN over do it.

A good rule of thumb is to try to get half your body weight in ounces of hydrating fluids each day and once your urine is the color of light lemonade you have had enough for the time being. Bright yellow means you need to hydrate and clear means you have had too much so you want a very very slight amount of color.

You don't just need to drink lots of water when losing weight. You drink lots of water no matter what because it is what your body requires to function properly to put it simply. I drink no less then a gallon of pure water a day. I consume this gallon in 4 servings. a 1/4 during exercise, a 1/4 during my post workout meal. a 1/4 with lunch and a 1/4 with dinner. This makes it easy for me to consume the gallon since I split up my servings to drink at times I will have no trouble consuming the water.
