I've heard it's impossible to spot reduce, but then I've also heard ab exercises work for this sort of thing. I want to lose around 2 inches on my waist, without losing much from my hips. If I naturally have an hourglass type figure will this be possible? Thanks!

You really can't significantly spot reduce effectively. Ab targeted exercises will give a tiny and likely insignificant increase in fat burning around your waist. But overall they don't work well for getting a smaller waist b/c they don't burn enough calories. And since most compound body movements will hit your core anyway, there isn't much reason to spend much time doing core exercises. It's not a bad idea to do one or two of them as part of a resistance training regimen, but that's more than enough.0
