MUDDERS

I would like to start training to participate in mudders. The goal is to be able to do the 2013 zombie mud run. It's an end of September event, which gives me just over a year to get ready for it.
I have about 60 lbs to loose to be at a healthy weight. I can walk FOREVER without getting tired, bike FOREVER without getting tired, swim at a moderate pace for over an hour without getting tired, and can climb stairs to my third story apartment without getting winded at a normal pace, but if I try to go faster up the stairs, I do get winded. I have been working out, both cardio and strength since February. I've come a long way towards getting in shape, and I have a long way to go. I haven't had the courage to try running yet, and my upper body could use a lot more strength.
Any advice you guys could give would be welcomed.

i just got home from the warrior dash and im so tired it kicked my butt...lots of hills and that was the hardest part..the other parts werent that bad so make sure you can that first before doing the mudder cause thats like 4 times as much..i have done 3 others 5k's been running at the gym and around the house and this one was completely different for me...so make sure for the mudder you got the endurance and able to run up and down hills, good luck0

Just sign up and do it! I met a guy in his 30's during my last tough mudder at mt snow who lost 300 pounds!! He still weighed a good 350 and finished the event. The mt snow one is a ski resort, lots and lots of climbing over 11 miles. You never know what you can do or want to work on until you dive right in. Everybody at these events is so supportive. Nothing like signing up and knowing you HAVE to train and then finishing and continuing to train to do better for the next. These events have motivated me so much, I am hooked and do every one I can. Good luck! I suggest finding one sooner, a year is so far away.0

I completed my first mudder in April, 5k I had been running and had done a flat 5k road race the month before. I finished and a decent time but it straight kicked my rear. I am now signed up for two Spartan Sprints next spring and summer. I am definitely upping my training for those!
As people mentioned, hills can take a lot out of you. And the obstacles will test your strength! Cross training is a must!
Good luck to you! Feel free to add me if you want!0 -
Running my first mudder this next weekend. Not sure how the mudder will be, but I've done two half marathons and a marathon. I would say first step is to make sure you can jog/run the full distance of the race you are registering for and can do it easily. Then add some cross training/strength training to help with all those obstacles.
Hills are easy, just find yourself a hill and run it. In the running world they're known as hill repeats. Run up it at a good pace, walk or jog back down and repeat. Start out with just a few, maybe 2 or 3, work up to 8 or 10. You can even find a bigger or longer hill to make it more difficult.0
