Seen and read a lot of info on here about how good weights/resistance is for you and like to try some out, but can't join a gym at the min. Can any recommend some good ideas or home programmes to still get a good workout (and suitable for overweight, unfit beginners!) Thanks.

A yoga mat, exercise bands, and some research to teach you how to use them. You can do almost anything with these.
    Good Luck.

You can get very fit doing nothing but body weight work. Also, a set of adjustable dumbbells and a bench go a long way for home weight training.

Calisthenics, which is pretty much just a fancy name for exercises done using your body weight, for example:

    -Push ups
    -Sit ups
    -Crunches
    -Planks
    -Dips
    -Pull ups
    -Squats
    -Lunges
    -Calf raises
    -Star jumps/jumping jacks
    -Burpees

The list goes on. Do these in a circuit format and with a decent level of intensity and you'll get a nice workout from it

infact, it may be worth you buying a swiss ball, this will help add even more variety to the workout, it will allow you to change the angles you're performing exercises at, give you a nice way to do crunches... loads more. They're quite cheap too

Kettlebells are also useful to buy - they provide a very good workout, working on a lot of muscle groups.
