Putting the scale away

I'm one of those "weigh yourself EVERY morning and let what the scale says effect your mood all day" kinda gals.
So, for the sake of my family (who bears the brunt of a bad weigh-in day) I am putting the scale away.
Not forever, mind you, but just enough away so I only weigh in once a week.
Starting tomorrow morning I will weigh myself, record the #, and put the scale in my son's car. A little extreme, I know, but if I just put it away under the bathroom sink I'd be getting it out the next day.
You know what? I'm terrified! What happens if in a couple days I gain weight, don't know it, and can't adjust for it? What happens if I lose weight and don't know it to be able to have a good mental day?
All I know is my family is asking me to try this approach so I'm gonna give it a go.
Check with my Tuesday morning to see if I'm sneaking out to my son's car to do a secret weigh-in in the dark

Desperate times call for desperate measures. I hope you can tackle this without stressing too much. It's obvious your family loves you and supports you and they are trying to help you do what's best. Eat healthy and exercise and let the chips fall where they may.0

I'm the same and I might do the same thing... Especially because my scale does weird things sometimes (I need to step on 10times to get an estimate of how much I weigh). And yeah, the scale drives me crazy and makes me depressed and anxious. I never tought I'd become that way, but now I did.
I'm trying out your approach, Penguin! I might go with every 5 days though. Do you also measure yourself only when you weigh-in or more often/less often?0 -
OMG I was the same way till 2 weeks ago and let me tell you Im glad I did, it's less stressful and it's nice to weigh yourself after a week and find a nice suprise You can do it hun Good Luck0

Two months today no scale... and I feel healthier and more "capable" than ever0
-
Yeah I do the same thing.. so yesterday I decided I'm only allowed to weigh myself on the 1st and 15th of every month!
I feel less stressed already0 -
Its good to see that I'm not the only one in this boat !!
I weigh myself every morning religiously and for the past 3 days it hasnt moved that b4st4rd lol !!!
Tomorrow morning is official weigh-in day so I might get my hubby to put it in his car (like you said) after because if it's in the house.. I'll find it !!
We can do it0 -
I had to do this because I'm the same way. I got to the point where hiding the scale somewhere wasn't enough. I had to take the battery out and have my bf hide it somewhere. That worked!0

When I get on the scale...lately..It ruins my whole day...been on the verge lately of depression..just because of what that number is telling me...
I'm off it...at least for a month...
A. I know I wont gain weight because I'm too programmed to eat and exercise.
B. Muscles look better so why do I care what I weigh?
Just a small tid bit too..I've lost weight before..*sigh* and at the weight I am now...I can wear clothing that I could only wear 20 pounds lighter last time around..
Things are different this time around... F that scale
but I know its haaaaaaaaaard not to look..just remember you are more than a number missy!!0 -
the scale does not have that much an impact on me but I took the batteries out last week....since it is a 9v I do not have those at home. If I weight myself now, It is at the gym or at my boyfriend place.0

I get on in the morning, in the afternoon, almost any time I'm in the bathroom"..my mood also fluctuates with the darn thing....and mine is crazy, can change by ten pounds inntwo hrs. May have to follow in your footsteps!0

Oh my god I am the same way. It depresses me so much. I am committing to only weigh in once a week for september. The scale makes me loony. Thanks for the tip.0

I think you are doing right, little extreme but it will do you good in the long run!
The numbers on the scales are just that NUMBERS, it how your feel and look. Hope it goes well for you. You can do it!0 -
Scale numbers vary day to day because alot of factors. It could be water or something is up with your body. Its all about inches and nsv's personally. I weigh myself daily and I don't really care because I know I'm doing better even if I go up a pound in a day. Just have fun its a life style change not a job.0

A few weeks ago, I let the scale number ruin a beautiful Saturday, not only emotionally, but food wise as well. That is not what this is supposed to be about for me. So, I started weighing only on Monday mornings. I have also started measuring monthly, and I have a pair of shorts I try on as my goal shorts. I think this is a much better indicator than the scale alone, which can be a nasty, moody, tyrant. I love that you have your son take the scale with him in his car. I have a bag of junk food my husband keeps in his car. It's for family movie night, but if it's in the house, it might become breakfast, so.... into the car it goes.0

You will be so happy that you put that thing away. The scale ruined my week one day! I was in your shoes. It ruled my day. Then I listened to all of the people on this site about not weighing all of the time and I stopped. I started embracing the changes that I have already noticed. No, I am not where I want to be yet, but damn, I am not where I used to be. Moving away from the scale allowed me to wrap my heart around me and the progress that I have made. I also picked out an old article of clothing that used to fit, but now is too tight. I used that to "measure" my progress. On days that I felt like it, I'd try those on and think about how much better they fit. Some people like to use a measuring tape to track progress.
Don't let the scale win. Track your food. Exercise your body. Ignore the scale. You will win.0 -
OMGSH I had to hide my scale a week ago because I was the same way... I feel much better not seeing it. I'll take my measurements and see if i'm losing inches. I may bring out the scale again at the end of sept. Good luck I know you can do this.0

this is TOTALLY ME too!!! I have no will power over that flipping thing and it has soooo much control over my day. Crazy! I'm going with once a week too. The thought is freaking me out a bit right now but it's worth a shot!0

So glad so many people's moods are affected by their weight gain. I thought i was losing it!!!
I would be in a slump all week (and i'm a proper cow when i'm in one of my moods!!) and it took me a while to realise what was causing it, was starting to think i had a huge hormone imbalance or a mental illness. I weighed in each week and when my plateau began it was a rollercoaster of emotions weekly.
Over the summer hols, i decided to weigh myself everyday and train myself not to be affected by it (being away from work and with my little boy every day helped my moods). the last 4 days i have put a pound a day on which doesn't make sense but i have managed not to let it affect me. Having said that, i have now decided to weigh in once a month as this is when i do my body measurements and tanita scale body scan composition. I am setting a 3lb loss a month goal and that way, fluctuations in water, or TOM won't affect me physically or emotionally.
I love what feisty_red saidWhen I get on the scale...lately..It ruins my whole day...been on the verge lately of depression..just because of what that number is telling me...

so true.
Doing it this way i can compare my weight loss to my measurements and body composition and hopefuly (fingers crossed) i will be happy with something that my body does to me!!!0 -
think of the scale as a compass. If it's going down, you're on the right track. Even if it's crawling upward, so long as you're exercising and adhering to your MFP plan, that just means you're building muscle. Don't let that get you down.0
