Vanity, Annoying or just proud of accomplishments

So I have been using MFP for 7 months now and have lost a total of 75 lbs. I changed my diet, my exercise has been strictly walking (and with spurts of jogging, something I haven't done in ages). I have been feeling really great and I can look at myself in the mirror now and smile.

I am the type of person that knowledge is power, and the more I know the more I accomplish. So during my journey of getting healthy, I have been reading, and researching all sorts of things.

So here is my dilemma, I have been getting great compliments about my weight loss and how I look. (insert inflated ego here) and then the question comes up, "how did you do it?" or "what are you doing to loose so much weight?" I start to tell them and notice that I start sharing what I have learned. The conversation sometimes is not only educational but I find myself trying to motivate others to get fit. Some, really listen to what I have to say and others get that blank look in their eyes, and that's when I end the conversation.

I find that when I talk about the things I have done, and learned I get a charge out of it. And when I see someone really interested, I get the feeling of helping them out, but the ones that space out, I get this feeling of "why did you ask?"

Is it just me or are there others out there that have experienced the same thing.

Just need to vent.
Thanks and to all keep up the good work.

  • I think the people that glaze over are looking for a miracle quick fix and when they realize that you worked hard to shed the weight they lose interest.

Totally get it. I have the exact same experience. I agree with the person who said the people who glaze over don't really want to work to lose. They are hoping it's something easy.

    this.

I have the same experiences. People will comment and then ask "how did you do it" or "what are you using" or "what program are you on". When I tell them about using MFP, and that means eating less and exercising more, most of them get that look in their eyes and you know they don't want to hear that. Everybody is looking for an effortless and quick fix. It only took me 55 years to figure out they don't exist. :)

Once most people realize that it's not a magic pill you take for 2 weeks, they lose interest.

Glad you had nothing else to add. Do you feel superior now?

It annoys me too but I realize that it's the internet and move on.

My answer is "Diet and Exercise". Most people want to start a conversation, not get a lecture, so unless they ask more questions, I change the subject to something more neutral.

This for me. If someone is genuinely interested then of course I will talk about it, but most people become bored because they have no desire to put the effort in (yet). It's the same things with a smoker and an ex-smoker, the smoker really doesn't want to hear about the ex-smokers sucess in giving up, it just makes them feel bad about their own failures.
