Stress Fracture in Foot?

Question? I believe that I have a stress fracture in my right foot. The pain is intense, even when just doing normal walking now. I know that I probably overdid things in the beginning...I have changed from running to biking now.

Okay...my question is this. I have read that there is really nothing that can be done. I know you all are not "doctors" but is it really necessary to go see my doctor? I have it wrapped up and elevating it now.....and will stay off it as much as I really can.

I would appreciate any advise from someone who has been through this :-)

Thanks!
Jill

I had a stress fracture in my foot in February. The doctor told me to rest it for 6 weeks. I was not in intense pain so I thought that meant that it wasn't hurt too badly. I continued to do lighter exercise but was determined not to stop. I ended up in a cast for 4 weeks and then had another 4 weeks of my tendons in my foot recovering from being in the cast. My doctor did tell me that if I had been in intense pain from the beginning he would have put me in a boot. My stress fracture ended up being a 4 month ordeal. If your foot still hurts after a solid week of resting it you definitely need to see a doctor.

One thing the doctor told me about was Os-Cal. It's a calcium supplement and it will help your foot heal faster and make the bone stronger. He recommended taking it everyday that I train for the 1/2 marathon I am going to run. I have been and it has helped a lot.

The only way to know for sure that you have a stress fracture is to see your doctor. If you are having intense pain, I would advise that you have a doctor diagnosis it. I know it can be bothersome to go to the doctor just to be told to rest it, but these are the types of things you don't want to mess around with. If you end up not treating your condition correctly, you could be laid up for months.

You should go see your doctor to find out if that is what is wrong.
  • Yes, go to a doctor. I thought mine would just get better, but stress fractures take weeks to heal. I wore a boot for 4 weeks, and then walked without it for 2 before going back into working out. Even now, 2 1/2 months after my initial diagnosis, I'm trying to ease back into things.

You don't want your bones to heal incorrectly or get worse!

I got a stress fracture in my right foot back in March. I went to the doctor because the more I walked the worse it got. I ended up getting a walking boot, but he told me that really good running shoes would work as well. The idea is to keep your foot as stable as possible. It might not be a bad idea to get it checked out by a doctor if it's easy. They x-rayed mine and said that it was just a hairline, but in worse cases I would have had to stay off of it completely (read: crutches). I couldn't run on mine for about 8 weeks after, and I could feel when my foot/ankle/muscles/tendons were being overworked. Once I got the stress fracture, I knew what to look for in the future so I've managed to avoid doing it again.

I would go to the doctor..stress fracture in my ankle, I was told the same thing to rest etc..eventually needed surgery and had to take time off and am still recovering from that..go to the doctor, he may want to put you in an air cast or boot..
