Apple Picking Season is Upon Us!

Out here on the east coast it's apple picking season. Apple picking is a fun activity you can do with family and friends, and depending on the farm you visit, can involve a lot of walking and physical activity too.

Yesterday, we went out to the farm to try the September ripe varieties. We will do this through October on and off as the varietals become ripe. It was a nice brisk walk through a huge orchard, weaving in and out of trees, side-stepping fallen apples (wear good shoes), dodging the occasional bee or two.

We picked up a bunch of Gala and McIntosh apples, crisp and fresh - picked right off the tree. These will be turned into low calorie apple crisps and other treats. In addition, I will take an apple with me to work everyday as a snack.

In short, it was a bit of exercise and some fun and if you like fresh apples, you can't beat it. I'll probably come back later in the season to pick up some cider to make into hard cider. So go out and support your local apple farms and get some exercise doing it!

So does this mean the price of apples will finally go down?

a few years ago i went with my wife, needless to say i wasn't to happy about it. The night before she went drinking and had a HUGE hangover while picking, so it turned out to be a very fun day.

We picked Cameo apples, and the guy at the orchard say they are sweet like candy, and let me tell you they are the best apple i have ever had in my life. I have gotten them at the market since but they just weren't the same, need less to say i will be back this year, and i will be getting as many as i can carry.

now that we have kids i doubt my wife will be hungover so i will miss that about this years trip.

We go every year! My kids LOVE apple-picking and we have an orchard just a few minutes away from our house. We always pick more than we can use and end up giving half of them away.

The apples picked fresh run about $1.50 or less per pound, depending on where you go. You can get the cheap stores ones, but nothing beats a crisp apple picked right of the tree. The ones on the east coast are quite good IMO. And some of the trees are ancient heirloom trees.

Still, I live for the crisp I make with Splenda, a little brown sugar, raisins and some oats. Though I'll be honest - my true motivation is for scoping some fresh local cider to convert into a tasty apple wine or hard cider beverage.

Just be wary of those cider donuts they have at most orchards. Those things are sinfully delicious and 200 cals a pop - but I'll be damned if it wasn't 200 well-spent cals, cuz it was warm and fresh...../drool :)

my daycare kids go out to my 3 apple trees, choose the best one they can find and come in to wash and eat it. Once a day they will do this fo snack and if I forget they certainly don't :)

I love apple and PUMPKIN season! I plan to make apple crisp as well as pumpkin bread (splendas and whole wheat flour and oatmeal)
  • We went apple picking over the weekend. The price keeps going up each year! We got a small bag which held probably 20-25 apples for $25. In all though we had a great time and my son had a blast and we all enjoyed the apple pie that was baked later!

We pick every year at a local farm. My kids LOVE it. We did it as kids too, so I'm really excited to be able to share the experience with my kids.

Then we bring them home and make apple sauce and apple pie filling. My MIL makes apple butter. Nothing better than fresh, off the tree apples!

Typically around here, we pay around $.70/lb but with the bad crop this year, we'll have to see what they charge!
