Creating my new home gym. Help!

I have been working out in the house since i started 7weeks ago. Its been productive, just using dumbbells but I now feel I need to move onto bigger weights to develop.

Has anyone got any recommendations for weight equipment/benches/barbells etc for home use? Or any good websites that I could have a look at?

I have my garage to use a gym so space is not an issue. Price is however. So no massive expensive workout stations.

I am also looking for around 50kg set of weights, that should be enough for me at the moment.

Thanks,

Scott

  • The 1st thing I would do is check on Craigslist. Many, many, many great ideas that turn into clothes hangers and people just looking to unload them to get the space back.

If you want to be like the Lord God, Zyzz, you will have to put forward some cash.

Save up for a gym membership, or a bumper set from Rouge Fitness.

depends on how much money you have.
but to anyone starting out and building a home gym I'd reccommend.

    power rack
    olympic barbell w/ weights
at least 1 set of bumper plates
homemade deadlift platform ....plywood and some good mats will do the trick
getting on a basic 5x5 lifting program
    a bench

start with that. then add stuff here and there. in the last year I've added:
    a sled for dragging
    a tractor tire
    farmer's walk handles
    a keg
    safety squat bar
    chains
    bands
    another bench
    DBs

    >please be in London

Yes, I am unsure of their international shipping, but yeah you can get some stuff off craigslist, or just get a gym membership, its worth the sacrifice.

Also what deadlifts said for home gym
  • Im not looking for much of a home gym, even just a bench and some weights to start off. Maybe a pull/chin up bar to start off.

Barely got any money lol im a student.

P.S I dont want to join the gym, I feel the time and effort required to go takes too much out of my day, i barely have time to workout as it is!

once i have a full time job etc then it will be more suitable but as for just now I need something convenient

if you're just a student and not working full time, i think it's crazy that you don't have the "time" to join a gym
being new, you'd probably learn a lot more training with other people. and it's silly to invest in a lot of home equipment if you aren't serious about it.

If you are on a really low budget, get some resistance bands. I got some from Fitmag.

Obviously I'd be advising bumper plates, power cage and an adjustable bench like everyone else, but I get the feeling you can't afford it right now.
  • Nah man I am serious about it. My diet is good and my workouts are good. I just need to up my weight.

As a student I have to travel a lot to my uni as I dont stay on campus, I also work part time and have lots of drawing project work to commit to as I am in my final year studying architecture. It doesnt leave a lot of free time.

I've tried it in the past and I end up giving up going to the gym. I need something I can have a go at in the house if I cant be bothered. Because once I start the workout I wont stop, but finding the motivation to go to the gym is hard when I have so many other things to do!

I get where you're coming from about being busy. But people find time to do the things they want.
The majority of strong people in the gym also have other stuff to do, but they prioritize.

4 hours per week is about all it takes when starting out.

I use some light resistance bands for rehab work and band distraction mobility work.
but you can't really make a good workout from just using them, IMO.
  • I suppose, its expensive too though. I buy them I have it for years, i go to the gym its £35 a month.........ok its better obviously but I dont have that kind of money to spend ha.

anyway, this thread aint about gym or no gym, im aware gym is better but i dont want to join, it doesnt meen I aint commited.

I want to know if theres any home gym equipment for cheap thats all?

I have an ironmaster extended set i got used for $100 (retail almost $1000.00) each hand can go up to over 100 lbs which is way more for anyone looking to bulk up. My home gym is the above said weight set with an ironmaster dumbell set, curling bar, straight bar and a stationary bike i also got used for $100.00. My opinion, shop used.
  • Theres not craigslist but there is Gumtree its the same thing.

Iv been looking on there and tbh there aint much difference in that to buying it new from Argos

There's not, but there's cheap alternatives.

Like someone said earlier about the extra stuff he's acquired, like sleds and tires.

There's lots of home-made options, like home made power bags, or filling rucksacks with weight and doing press ups, or plenty of bodyweight options.

    The short of it is:

You're not going to be doing 5x5, dead lifts, back squats or bench press until you part with some serious cash

but there's plenty of strength and conditioning options out there for little to no money.

I'm concerned you're not familiar with the quality that's available. The stuff in Argos is horrible. https://www.strengthshop.co.uk/ do stuff at what many consider a good price.
If you see any equipment like that available at Argos prices..... you bite their hand off.
  • Not sure if this will help you, but if you do a more "functional training" style of strength training instead of the traditional, you can get by with less equipment. Its a lot of body weight moves, plyometrics, and combo moves that use multiple muscles at once.

    An example:

Yeh this is the kind of training I have been doing although I have it split into a 3way routine, (just started) used to be a 5day routine. I concentrate on a different body part each time instead of a full body routine.

    Thanks for this though!

Whats wrong with the stuff from Argos? a weight is a weight, as long as its the correct weight?... ok you could get a nicer bar, but when i need a better bar i'll buy a better bar?!
